Steering rack bushings

So you had issues with the ES bushings going in? I have a Rack Doctor reman rack sitting in front of me, as well as the Whiteline bushings and have the following issues:

1 - Instructions specify 2 different sized bushings: 2 x 67115 and 2 x 67116, with the 67115 being the smaller diameter of the two. I received 3 x 67115, 1x 67116. Called Whiteline and they are sending me another 67116.

2- Just went out and checked the rack, both mounts are the same size, and will require 4 x 67116. Have another email into Whiteline.

So, what bushings did you receive, were they all the same size, and why didn't they fit? The 67116 will be perfect, I just need two more of them . . .

You should have received two different size bushings. The factory bushings look to be the same size, but they are different. When you get everything taken apart, you will see that one hole in the rack is larger than the other.

Both of my mounts on the Rack Doctor rack are the same size and will require the 67116. I guess they may remove a sleeve or something else that is in there from the factory ? Or maybe use a different mount when rebuilding it? One thing to be aware of with this combo. I don't have my OEM rack out yet to provide anything else of value but will update once it is pulled.

That may be the difference as mine is OEM.

These are the only steering rack bushings you will probably find. I had the same issue with my truck last year and bought a set of these to replace the worn factory rubber bushings.

I did some research and it appear that a 2006 4runner and a 2006 GX470 have the same steering rack.

I contacted suspension.com, they said these bushings will not work for a fourth Gen 4runner.

They told me they are for Lexus GX460 2010- Lexus GX460 2011-
Lexus GX460 2012- Lexus GX470 2003- Lexus GX470 2004-
Lexus GX470 2005- Lexus GX470 2006- Lexus GX470 2007-
Lexus GX470 2008- Lexus GX470 2009 only.

They said they don't know of any poly steering rack bushings for my 4runner.

These worked for you with minimal problems? Are you sure it wasn't a different part number?

bought the poly bushings for the 03 to 09 Toyota steering rack but after I pulled the rack out there is 2 mounting locations on the rack to the cross member. The one side is oblong and the other is round. Is this normal?? The bushings are both round?? This could be the cause of my rack moving slightly upon turning the steering wheel. The bolt can move back and forth in the oblong bushing.

I'm kinda shocked FJ Cruisers, Tacomas and 4runners can mix and match suspension components but when it comes to steering racks, they are all different. Certainly Toyota engineers continued using the same parts throughout the different models for ease of manufacturing?? Like earlier generations (IE first gen Taco/3rd gen 4runner interchangeability)

I actually emailed Energy Suspension about making 4runner steering rack bushings and I got the classic dip & dodge answer.

We have looked into this and while it may be feasible to make a kit, the labor for the install is huge!
It also appears that the rack for the 4 Runner 2005-2009 are vehicle specific and not shared with other Toyota truck/SUV.

"The labor to install is expensive!" Like a Tacoma is any different?? Also who cares if the rack isn't shared with any other Toyota? A VW Beetle rack is different than a Ford Fiesta rack :ybrick: I'm going to give this dude an ear full tomorrow.

Reviving a semi-dead thread but here's what CVJ said when I contacted them today about replacement rack bushings, specifically using the bushing kit from energy suspension made for the 2nd gen Tacomas:

"The Energy Suspension bushings will only fit the driver side on your 2004 4Runner. The passenger side is different from the 05-15 Tacoma. We have not yet found a good poly urethane mounting bushing kit for the 03-09 4Runner. All available options are currently made of rubber."

FWIW for having swapped my steering rack for what I believed to be rack bushings.. the new rack appeared to have the same amount of movement as the removed. In the only way I could visualize/test; turning lock to lock while in the driveway.
