Same thing happened to me just a week ago in Chicago...F'n lowlifes!
Just bought an OEM replacement for my '04 SE from finishlinewheels.com for $180 since I couldn't find a single used one for sale.
I'm also getting a lock from Automotive Accessories Connection for $27 and hopfully this helps. It's suppose to lock to the winch system and the wheel.
Now I just need to get the stealer to replace the cable, but not sure what that's going to cost, and then I'll get a cheap tire.
Overall, this will cost me over $500...so much for the planned lift.

It appears that the company that was making the winch lock has gone out of business. Does anyone know a suitable substitute for the lock? I know that you can buy the locking system from Toyota, but that just locks the cable. I was something more that locks the tire to the frame like the winch lock set up.

I bought this one for my 4R and it works as expected. I just loop the cable around the cross member a couple times, then down through the lugnut hole.

And about the cable... if they cut the cable in the first place to steal the spare, wouldn't the cable lock just be a second cable to cut before they steal the spare?

Simple, those only protect the tire when mounted to the rim. For the spare tire, it's just held in place by an arm through the center hub hole connected to a tiny cable. The lock I linked to actually has a cable that runs through the lugnut hole and then a bigger lock on the end keeps the tire from dropping. And sure, if they brought along a giant pair of cable cutters I guess they could cut through it, but there's not much space between the tire and the end of the cable to get a good grip. But again - anything's possible if you have the right tools for the job! I just made it more difficult for them.

that sucks. sorry to hear about that. i hate people that will steal cars or from cars. my 91 ford explorer, had its spare tire stolen just a bit ago. i dont know when, but when i got a flat, i went under to pull the spare down, and i saw, you guessed it, no spare!! the cable looks the exact same as yours, frayed, but cut perfectly at the end. most interesting. i will certainly chain up the tire on my runner...
BTDT RE: cut spare winch cable way back when in the early 90s on a S-10.
With the runner, 36 inches of 1/4" galvanized chain and a Master Lock waterproof padlock. Chains right through the winch bracket or whatever it is right above the spare and completely around the tire + rim. Snug its length up one link when locking and it does not move, so I don't think I'll have to worry about any kind of rubbing/scratching the rim.
Visible, although if the bright safety orange coated chain came in 1/4" as well, I would've gone with that for even greater visual deterrence.
Total cost: ~ $13.

anyone buy the spare guard? it looks like it would work very well but i want to know if the site is legitimate. are there any other good options for keeping the spare secure?

I guess the other option would be to secure the tire with a metal tube/sheath around the cable.
I would think in Chicago, or any city, if someone has the tools to cut the cable, they'll have no trouble cutting the lock that would be on it too.
Maybe I should hook up a cable from car battery to the wheel which is activated when I lock the vehicle.
This is truly annoying!

i got a trimax cable spare tire lock from amazon... it's pretty thick so i doubt a thief will want try to take the time cutting through it.
