Well, the good thing is you are covered for theft.
I'll be honest with you, back in 1985 I ordered a new Z-28. It was my first brand new car.
With exactly 720 miles on the clock it was stolen from the parking garage of my work. This is a very nice area - The Denver Tech Center.
The car was found by an observant shopper 35 miles away in Boulder who saw two very young looking kids, one in my car the other walking looking into car windows at the CrossRoad's Mall. He thought it looked very odd these two teenagers would have the wherewithal to be legitimately driving a new Z-28.
He called the cops and it just so happened there was a Boulder cop on the other side of the mall.
Caught red handed.
I wish they would have never found it. The back tires were completely bald. The steering column was completely jacked and both the front and rear bumper covers were destroyed from being towed from the scene to the police station and then again from the police station to the impound lot.
I filed victim restitution charges against the 18 year old - a punk from New York who have been arrested about 15 times for burglary and auto theft. The other punk was 16 and I couldn't do anything to him.
A week before I was scheduled to go to court for the victim restitution I got a call from the Greenwood Village police detective stating the hearing would not be taking place and not sure if I would find the reason good news or bad.
The 18 year old punk from New York was spotted and recognized by a Denver cop in the parking lot of Stapleton Airport (that was pre-DIA). The punk was driving a yellow Z-28 that was stolen from a Chevy dealer the day before and had a BOLO on it.
The cop drew his gun on punk, the punk nailed the gas and aimed the car straight at the cop. The cop opened up and ladies and gentlemen we have one scumbag with quite a bit of lead in his brain.
I told the investigator "No worries my friend. Justice has been served and I have my restitution". He laughed and said he didn't think there would be anybody mourning the passing of this POS - he left nothing but heartache in his wake.
But the car - it never ran remotely the same afterwards. I am pretty sure they took it out all day long and just red-lined it. Hell, to burn a set of new tires down to the cord takes some effort.
Moral of the story is I wish I'd never seen the car again. Ended up trading it in about a month after we got it back.
