to shorten an axle you have to get the shaft re-splined or find a shorter one that fits and cut your housing that size. Getting it re-splined is not cheap, but if you can cut, shorten, and safely weld the housing yourself the whole process isn't too bad.
I would stay toyota though unless you plan on really big house power as it would look better than miss matched axles and generally be cheaper and make life easier. If you stay toyota there are also always 30 spline longs to consider, not cheap per se but a good deal considering how strong they make a toy axle. At least around here old toyota axles are pretty easy to come by.
