Stupid windshield

Are you sure you're not driving mine? Is it on the passenger side right next to the A-pillar halfway up? Because that's where I just noticed a crack today. I assume the great state of Oregon puts gravel all over the roads like Colorado.
Those aren't mountains on our license plate, that's a cracked windshield.

Yeah the rock hit right in the black edge next to the pillar about halfway up.

Yes, I-25 is brutal on windshields. Really I lost count how many windshields I have replaced over the years but I believe my 4th gen is on #3 or 4. I put at least 4 in a silverado we used to have and about 2 or 3 in a Pontiac G6 we also used to drive.
My old silverado got two new windshields in less than a month when it only had about 2k miles and a month old. Took it in for a leaking front diff, not only did the dealer manage to break the front diff, they also busted the windshield. A month later I get the truck back and my wife and I were heading out of town ( on I-25) and a semi-truck lugnut from the other side of the freeway breaks the 1 week old windshield.
For about 7 years my wife commuted between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I am soooo glad she doesn't have that drive anymore.

Yep, that's hilarious. If it curves upward, then it's identical.
Since winter isn't over yet, you may wait until the gravel and salt trucks are off the roads. I don't plan on replacing mine until April or May, since I don't feel like going through this mess twice.

I'm waiting till I after I drive across country to move to Maine this summer.
Don't have a problem with salt trucks or snow on the Oregon coast, they're rebuilding the north jetty on the Columbia river bar so I get stuck behind dump trucks pulling trailers full of rock. My 96 Honda has faired well but I guess one got my wife while she was driving.

I second the part about FJ's, my windshields never lasted more than 2 years. I suspect it was the steep angle.
On my 4runner, i have a small chip on the drivers' side at 2K miles.
Unless your insurance is going to pay for the Toyota glass, or you expect your 4runner to be a collector car someday, get aftermarket glass and save the $$.

I thought "factory" glass was farmed out to a glass contractor. Not made by Toyota at all. Then they put the Toyota name on it and get twice the money for it. I really don't think Toyota makes their own glass.

Toyota probably does not make it own glass as is the case with most interior plastics, air bags etc. but they hold the manufacturers to a higher quality control spec.

There is no such thing as "factory Toyota glass" just like there is no factory Toyota tire. Here's how it works:
1 Toyota writes a spec for a component
2 That spec is sent to vendors
3 Vendors quote a price for a quantity
4 Low bid wins.
The only time this changes is when there is a technology or type of advantage the vendor uses or has and can be perceived as value added. Then the best component instead of the lowest bid wins.
This sounds bad but Toyota is really good at writing specs that result in the quality, reliability and durability we all know.

I guess that's why my 99 4Runner came with 3 NGK plugs on the LHS and 3 Nippondesnos on the RHS.
lane:No speed record here, but I finally suffered my first crack yesterday after 51K miles. Not due to rock damage, rather weather related. We had freezing fog/mist a couple of mornings a ago with temps in the mid-teens. The only thing I can think of is that the combination of the fog/mist continuously freezing on the windshield and the defroster running at full blast in an effort to keep the glass clear had the effect of pouring hot water on a cold window. I now have a 27" crack running along the bottom of the windshield. Thankfully, all but 10" are contained in the black boarder of the glass, so it is not noticeable. It also begins and ends at the bottom of the glass, so should not spread any further. Sucks just the same as if it occurred within the first bit of ownership.

Usually a good strategy to have at least a 2nd supplier for sake of seller and buyer. I am told the 2011 tsunami wiped out the sole supplier of metal flake for auto paint and caused some delays until another supplier could be found.

same here, cracked within the 1st 5k on 2006 T4R, no more cracks on 2011 T4R with bug shield. Knock on wood.

all was fine, no rocks, no chips....but wife driving home in a driving snow storm, defroster probably on medium to high, and she says the crack just popped up...and along the ride, spread right along the bottom half of the windshield.
