sudden engine reving

i pulled into a parking lot, started easing head forward into a parking space, with my foot on the brake the whole time, came up to about 4 ft from the building wall, while my foot was still on the brake, i started to shift into park, when all of a sudden it felt like the abs went out, & the engine reved way up, so of course i applied as much force as i could on the brake pedal, but the vec. felt like it was still going to launch forward since it felt like i had no brakes, this all happened in a split second so my hand continued to shift into park, & it locked in, but the engine continued to rev high, so i quickly turned the key off. my point is i thought that the engine was suppose to cut off at that point, it didnt. first off its not a mat under the pedal, since my foot was on the brake, but ill tell you, if i was parallel parking or stopped at a red light pulled up close to the other cars bumper, i believe i would of hit the car in front of me. remember, like i said it felt like i lost abs as the engine reved, & im pretty sure that those brakes would not of stopped me launching forward if i didnt ram it into park. waited 15 min. & started it up & nothing seemed wrong. ive read the threads on sudden acceleration but it seems like toyota chalks it up to mats making the gas pedal stick, i of course knew the pedal itself couldnt of frozen, again the mat didnt move & is anchored using floor hook, plus my foot was on the brake & i was easing forward. so im asking if anyone has heard of this? no its not about jumping on a law suit wagon, its about feeling safe. this is all i could find on it. http://www.autoblog.com/2010/02/22/abc-news-expert-says-electronic-design-flaw-to-blame-in-runaway/

It happened to me once in my FJ. Some people over there claimed it was the AC Compressor cycling. Sorry to hear about it. I doubt we'll ever get a straight answer out of Toyota about what is happening, yet I am betting they know exactly what is causing it.

Most car companies realize their cars have faults. If you read the book "On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors" by John DeLorean you'll get a pretty amazing look inside of a car manufacturer and what lengths they are willing to go to. I know that doesn't answer your question..... but it is interesting nonetheless considering what has been happening with Toyota specifically for the last year or so.

i hate to say it but im kinda glad im not the only one that this has happened to, i just cant see how the ac compresser recycling would send to revs sky high & shut off the ABS, i had to push real hard on the pedal ,it was as if the brakes were not working & even tho it was out of drive still felt like it wanted to go forward till it clicked into park.if something like this happens when parallel parking without the prior intent of shifting into park, someone could get hurt, thats what worries me. ..

Nothing exactly like that ever happened to me… What had happened to me on occasions (usually on hunting trips and off-roads) that I would push brake and accelerator pedals at the same time when I am only try to push the brake pedal … of course I always have my hunting boots on when that happens..:whipping2
I have also have done the same thing (twice I believe) in my wife “Altima” ….. with regular shoes.
Of course when I do that my initial reaction is to push brake harder because vehicle is not slowing down and when I do that engine revs up….

Link the blog you have in your post can not be more far from truth… this guy modified the CPU circuitry (by cutting and jumping connections) and then made his claims… He retracted his statements after Toyota got offensive and did the same “CPU modifications” to Ford “Fusion” and one of the Subaru models….

The question I have is how did you know that ABS was off..?

first off, i didnt have my foot on both pedals. second, u have never felt a vec. loose abs before? u have to push with all ur might to even slow the vec. down. heres a link , read what others have said to the same thing on many different vec. ive been driving for 38 years & its nice to hear someone just chalk this up to driver error instead of admitting that there may be a problem, thanks so much for ur help! sudden engine reving when parking - Google Search

I believe you misread my post… It was not my intention to “chalk this up”. I simple shared my experience with “engine revving” and pointed on my own mishaps and errors with the smile about it.
Of course I felt ABS working in many vehicles, but I am still not sure what you meant by “ABS was off”… When ABS is engaging I would call it “ABS was on” or “ABS kicked-in”

I love when people say they've been doing X for XXXX number of years blah blah blah. It just takes one mistake. Not saying you made a mistake (neither was previous poster) but I certainly wouldn't rule that out simply because you've been driving for so long. It happens.

I also agree that you're wording on the ABS is a little confusing. Same thing... went off as in it turned off (?) or "went off" like it activated?

another one , by saying what i did, i was referring to the fact that i know the difference since i started driving before cars had ABS, u ever drive down a road, have the engine shut off, brake pedal seem like it went to the floor & u need to push with all ur might to stop the vec.? sorry i mentioned ABS, it felt like i had no brakes. READ what some said on that google search page & you'll see there does seem to be a problem thats not being addressed. it doesnt matter how wrong i may of phrased it, the fact remains to me it felt that the brakes lost all power, felt like pedal went to the floor, & i had to do a leg press on it. dont try & say this is normal & i know for a fact i didnt have my foot on both pedeals since i was easing into a parking space, if my foot was on both pedals the engine would already be reving high, that didnt happen until i shifted from drive . i wasnt wearing boots & no my foot didnt accidently slip off the brake. so again, instead of trying to help someone u make wise remark . im sorry i even posted this, i thought maybe if i did, combined with all the others , that maybe some of the companies would admit theres something to this. thanks so much for ur helpful opinion, but u know where i think u can put it. moderaters close this thread if u like, im done seeking or trying to help here. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=sudden+engine+reving+when+parking&aq=f&aqi=m1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

im sorry if i offended anyone but this is a scary thing & i thought people would be a little more concerned with a possible serious issue that has happened to more than a few people & on more than 1 make of vec. instead of blatantly just chalking it up to driver error like the big companies do. no computer performes perfectly 100% of the time thats why we need to call a tech in for help, so what makes a car company insist that there could never be a problem with the ones in they're vec.s

Why are you getting all personal? These are not wise ass remarks being made only questions for clarification. People are merely asking questions to try and fully understand the situation. How can anyone be made aware of something that sounds foggy at best? And yes, it does matter how you phrase it when you're trying to re-tell a story that is of this magnitude. Clear and concise is the only way to communicate in this instance.

If anyone is coming off as "wise" I think it's you and I'm not sure why. To deny that it's even possible human error was involved is silly. Certainly it's possible just like it's possible your car went crazy.

if the way that i explained it sounds foggy at best, take the time to read what others on the google link have said, maybe they can explain it better. i was very polite ,till YOU started in on it cause u didnt like my remark to the previous post. of course i realize it could be driver error but it wasnt! & while im at it, on the issue of ur tired of people stating "xxx because of years of xxx, blah, blah, blah" (your words,- u dont think thats a wise crack?)dont most folks want to know how many years you have been in business before they hire u to do work on ur house or something? maybe some day something similar will happen to u & you'll have to deal with a guy just like yourself. i thought this forum was about helping another owner, this banter is exactly what isnt needed here, it leads off topic & starts arguments. i for one dont want to get banned.so maybe the mods should close this before it gets any worse.

In my opinion, most of people will not help you after remarks like that…. usually result would be quite contrary. I hope, for your sake, you realize that.

However, I am going to try to get back on your original concern… As you have mentioned in your last post you felt that your brake pedal went to the floor with no or very little braking, if it actually did that then I would recommend looking into possible brake booster issue (like eclectic booster pump failure), master brake cylinder problem or some other brake system issue that caused vacuum leak.

Good luck.

I work on computers and I hear stuff all the time about how a person's computer suddenly just downloaded 20 GB's of porn and they had nothing to do with it. Those are the types of situations I've dealt with. I also had another situation with a guy who had "25 years working for Nissan" who cost me 1/2 a day because he couldn't cut a damn key to save his life. No... it HAD to be that the ignition (and door locks, and trunk latch) were replaced and not his shitty key. Nope, sure enough... had someone else cut a new key who had been working there for 5 years and it was perfect.

The point was simply that I do not think experience means human error cannot come into effect. Experience is great to have but XXX years of experience doing anything does not remove the human element from it.

in case the mods cant decide to close this thread or ban me first, maybe this will help...i have 1 last thing to say to u sir, the dk in ur handle is a good abbreviation for you, all thats missing is 2 letters in between. :flipoff: have a nice day!

NP Man. If I'm a **** for believing we are all human and things can happen (all the while never denying your story) I can live with that. :thumb3:

u have never felt a vec. loose abs before? u have to push with all ur might to even slow the vec. down.

Isn't ABS the automatic system that "pumps" the brake to prevent the wheels from locking up on slick surfaces? I have experienced what you describe (pushing with all your might to slow the vehicle down) and this (in my case) was a loss of power braking.

Your experience of sudden acceleration is rather concerning as you are not the first to experience it in the 4Runner (The Josh had it happen recently too).

I don't think we'll ever know the truth in what's going on with Toyota and sudden unintended accleration.

Toyota wants people to share their story on FaceBook. Someone should indicate these incidents. I'd let them know how they've let me down.
