Yes unfortunate the "Old Guard" can be a little crusty , but seeing as how he's written alot of these sticky's (1Engineer) haha I said it , he can afford to be cynical to those that chose NOT to read much less bother to search ! So now how about how to improve this mess , sticky's in CAPS (Hard to miss) different color (eye catching) , break them down in size similar to 3rd & 4th ? Just trying improve the experience for the one time members !

Actually, it is way more complicated than the "general" information presented provides.

So yea, 285s will rub without a lift. But what about with a lift and all the details that come along with tires size and fitment...

Each tire, brand/model even in the same advertised size is competently different. Wheel size and offset make a huge difference (what are some combinations that do work) Caster makes a huge difference, Heck even the particular UCAs you run can change everything. Did you know the light racing UCAs can be adjusted to allow FJ guys to run 35s without a body mount chop (this is unverified BTW just heard this from a guy doing it yesterday). Not directly applicable to a 5th, but there might be a technique that could be leveraged.

My point is there is so much information missing on this forum. The answers are generally missing detail and much of it is bland and lacking substance. Maybe it just needs more time, but I think there is an underlying thrust in this forum that stops the technical details from being filled in. Don't get me wrong, there is still great information and individuals here. I have used it to solve several problems and learned a ton.... I just think it can be so much better.

What has amazed me ever since the internet and forums really happened is just how resourceful people are. Real enthusiast can pretty much figure out anything when you bring them together. I've seen things done that a corporate giant could never pull off. I've even seen some of these projects turn into very successful businesses. The power of real users doing real things in diverse situations is beyond what any corporation can accomplish.

Anyway, that is what communities with smart enthusiast can do. However, there is always the negative side of an open community. Drama, bully's, stone throwers.... That is what kills all the positives.

This is why I think sections help. It keeps people who care about a subject in one place and they feel more obligated to contribute. You are always going to have those that just want answers and never want to give back.... but the less lurkers the better. Slamming people for asking dumb questions is just not productive in the long term. It's better to ignore them or give them a quick link and be done with it.

Stickies are a good resource but they aren't the end all be all of forums. I got a computer virus trying to download something from a dropbox linked in one of the stickies and ended up having to wipe my computer and redo it with a recovery disc, I was trying to find the fluid used in a limited center diff I used a linked maintenance file I found in a sticky which ended up being wrong/inconsistent with other info from other places. I asked a question in the lift buyers guide a week ago and never got an answer.

If someone asks a question and the answer is posted somewhere just link it instead of *****ing, that way when someone does search there's a higher probability of finding their answer.

Lol I do like the idea of making the stickies stand out. Maybe just make them constantly bold (like an unread thread). I know that gets my attention every time I come to the sight.

Let's just relax. We all know generally the stickies contain great and useful information (I appreciate all the work/effort put into them). But everyone who always yells "search", the search function often pulls up thousands of posts and I often end up spending hours going through results before just giving up. So it's not always cut and dry...just sayin.
 
My $.02- make newly created accounts be open for 30 days or 10-20 posts before they create new threads. This will force them to get to know the forum and utilize the search features.

I'm a member of a lot of forums, and this one is better than most. At least some of the "trolls" being referred to have helpful answers as a part of their cheeky responses. I do agree that the forum should be broken apart into subject matter.

I also agree there should be more active moderation.

do you mean nashman's FSM? what year is your 4Runner? i have a working version of the 2010 PDF version (maybe the HTML one too) and can PM you a link to download.

I don't remember specifically, I was downloading the different stuff the dude had listed, the repair manual and stuff like that.

Right, you're ridiculing someone's question, but not them as a person. The difference of which is completely discernible on a message board. Whatever helps you stay on that high horse pal.

You make a choice to respond in the manner you do. Next time you see a guy asking about tire fitment, try just not clicking that respond to post button, you might find not playing Internet cop very freeing.
 
threads and responses like these are on every large forum. its the nature of the beast.

the people defending the noobs aren't here enough to be annoyed by their behavior. and if/when they DO stick around long enough, they typically end up on the other side of the fence, with a new group of people defending the noobs.

its a cycle.

Literally, your first words on this forum were telling another user that his custom emblem "Looks dumb." You then proceeded to mock someone for getting "ass hurt" when he was criticized. Now you are going after other users that are widely (but not universally) respected because you think they are being intolerant of new posters. You are entitled to an opinion, as am I. My opinion is that your 12 posts have both warranted that "intolerance" and exemplified why some users have little patience with new posters.

I'm pretty much a nobody here. Most of my 244 posts are either poor attempts at humor or a relatively useless contribution about some legal issue. While my contributions are limited, they are honest efforts to help the forum and other users in some way. I believe most users here share those intentions. I disagree with your opinion of [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION], but I do think there is ample opportunity for improvement in this forum, especially with regard to new members. You appear to be fairly new yourself, so I would sincerely appreciate your thoughts on what could be improved (so long as it is not simply more criticism of others).

I like the idea of CAPS & color just so it stands out , at least they might peruse it before hand to find a very easy quick answer to their question ? Maybe please !!!!
 
Granted, I've only worked with Joomla and Wordpress .. but does vBulletin offer the ability to manipulate and or create a new folder image (Maybe a colored image of some nature)?

Also, I definitely agree that the font should always be bold and maybe some type of offset color to have it stand out may benefit as well.

I don't see this as a necessary change since in my opinion it already stands out, but I could see where new members may overlook them.
