I believe a main purpose of sparebumper products is to reduce whiplash and withstand low speed rear impacts - usually what happens on intersections with traffic lights, stop signs, etc.

Agreed this is about all its good for, i'll raise my 5mph theory to 10 mph

Apparently you have never had one or bump/hit anything. This is truly a SUPERBUMPER, it will absorb much more then 5 mph hits. My truck was hit in the rear VERY hard (much more then 5mph) and caused the vehicle lose control and was totaled. The superbumper was destroyed and the rear was fine.

I’ve had several different hitch steps (at close to the same money) and a little tap and its history!

Agree that rear hitch steps are just that, steps, they are not crash rated.

I would rather have the superbumper then the park assist. I certainly do not depend/trust the park assist (PA). There has been several times when the PA failed to trigger. PA has problems seeing some fences, poles and obstacles. The backup camera is far more dependable. To me the PA is useless. I would not have even gotten the PA if I had the choice, $500 for junk!

How do you get a failure out of "The superbumper was destroyed and the rear was fine." My truck took a BIG hit directly on the Superbumper and the rear of the vehicle didn't have a scratch!

My Superbumper actually took the hit at its end and still was able to protect the rear of the vehicle. When I say protect, I'm saying not a scratch. The hit was so hard, the vehicle spun twice and hit a guard rail. If the vehicle didn't hit the guard rail, the vehicle would have not had ANY damage.

Lexus made it mandatory to purchase PA if you wanted other options.

Why would PA be useful in bumper to bumper traffic? It was intended for parking "PARK ASSIST". Yes it is front and rear.

The point of the Superbumper is for low speed impacts. It is not intended for high speed impacts which is what appears to have happened with Koz. There are plenty of examples of no damage on low impacts on their website and through Google.

Since I sit in a lot of traffic everyday, the Superbumper fits my needs perfectly. I'm just trying to decide between chrome or black right now...LOL. I have a white 4Runner so maybe the chrome one might match better.

For a white 4runner I agree with the chrome or stainless as well. I have a black TE so I would go with the black. I see pictures of the 2010+ 4runners with this step installed but was wondering if anyone had trouble with the install. Our hitch receivers are kind of short and the spare tire is almost right up to the back side of the receiver. Also how much length does it add to the rear? I had a regular hitch step which was crushed by a parking attendant against the wall so I was looking at this one as a replacement. Thanks.

I would say black only because of the ease of touching it up if you do get hit.

If you can wait for the stainless, this is the way to go. The black would be the next choice because you can easily touch it up. The chrome looks better then the black but it is hard to touch up (removing rust and polishing it constantly).

As far as how much impact it will take (which is why you are buying it), I would have to say at least 15/20 mph. It has to be the best rear protection on the market. I don't see how at parking speeds it could fail.

Again, how did it fail if there wasn't a sctatch on the rear? Please don't tell us it failed because the rest of the vehicle was totaled. It did a better job then it was design for, better then anyone could expect.

Superbumper was willing to replace it for FREE. Every vehicle that has a hitch should have this bumper. It is the BEST rear protection on the market and worth every penny!

I don't really follow how you were hit on the Superbumper, it did no damage, but it was able to cause you to lose control and still total the vehicle. Were you both moving? Were you stopped? Was it a sideswipe a la Russ Wheeler of Days of Thunder?

My Wife was driving on a three lane highway in the rain (in the middle lane). A young guy in a brand new Camaro lost control behind her and was spinning when he hit the Superbumper (apparently going too fast in the rain) and caused her to spin into the metal guard rail (which destroyed the whole front end).
