Supercharger install pending, need a little help/clarification

nor_cal51501 that's awesome!! I'm glad for you that it was an easy fix. Kind of hard to understand how a supercharger can get "too" much air...but it is what it is. That's a lot better than chasing down vacuum leaks or trying to figure out how to re-learn the ECM...lol!!

Im a little worried now...Although, I have my stock air box, I purchased an AEM dry Hi-Flow air filter and an Airaid intake tube. Suppose to flow better air by basically getting rid of that big stupid resonator box. I hope running this type of an intake...doesn't screw up my system like the K & N intake/filter did yours!! I paid like $150 for them back in November..that's a lot of money to not get to use them.

Airaid Intake Tube, Air Raid Cold Air Intake Tube

Now since you don't have the 7th injector system...your basicly done...right?? I guess there isn't anyway to really tune the engine?!? So, what are you going to do for extra fuel? Run water meth? Or, due to where you live and running the stock S/C pulley...you don't need anything?? No pinging to deal with??

I have an airaid and have no issues with it.

How strange, maybe the K&N has more airflow than the air raid? Also, maybe it's something that the 2001 and up with fly by wire has an issue with?

Could be the truck year difference. The pipe wouldn't be too different between the k&n vs the airaid but the k&n filter is out in the open. I still have the stock box with a deck plate and a s&b air filter which is very similar to a k&n drop in filter

Oh, ya. That's why then. Keeping the stock box acts as a flow restricter. My K&N was out in the open with only the air filter as a restricter. Also, do you have your fuel pressure regulator hooked up to your supercharger or is it still plumbed to the airbox?

I have the fuel pressure regulator connected to the boost port of the supercharger.

Hey zacattack20 thanks for the info! That puts me at great easy! I was already looking up what the store policy was on how long do they allow on returns!

Now, I can get excited about getting rid of the OEM intake tube!! I truly dislike that huge resonator! I plan on powder coating my valve covers and with that resonator on there, you couldn't even see the passenger side!!

I see you are running the deck plate mod. Do you recommend doing the mod? My biggest question is: can you really tell a differance with the plate off?? I've been thinking about doing it, just didn't know if it was really worth it. And I wanted to make sure before I cut a 4" hole in my air box! I appreciate your input...Thanks.

I read on Speedy's website that he gained 15hp by opening the deck plate. I haven't opened mine yet, but I can let you know. Personally I hate the sound it makes as it drones in the cab when it's open and you're giving it a good amount of gas, but everyone is different. If I could go back I'd skip that mod, but we'll see with the sc.

Wow...15hp!! That's 6-7% increase in horsepower!! That's quit a bit...but don't know if its worth all the noise. I think I'll wait..and if the S/C leaves me still wanting more...then I'll go ahead with the deck plate.

Thanks your your in-put!

I haven't checked the difference since putting on the supercharger. When I got my truck smogged last year I put the deck plate back in just for that and I felt like the truck didn't have the oomph it has when the deck plate is out. And the sound doesn't bother me at all, I'm just used to it I guess.

i dont mean to help draw any blanks or anything but i have a airaid open filter and a airaid intake tube, pretty much looks exactly like your k&n and i have a 2nd gen SC and she runs fine?
then again i do have a urd 7th as well and maybe thats help regulating it.. idk food for thought

Ya, I saved my K&N setup because I'm pretty sure that I was just running WAY too lean with the K&N. I don't doubt that the 7th would fix it, because that would richen up the mixture. Curious, do you have a plate that surrounds the filter like a box or is your filter just out in the open? Also, thanks for chiming in, i wondered if the 7th would by enough to fix it or not. Glad to hear it is.

If I remember your picture correctly from looking at it last night it's the same as your. It's just a heat shield surrounding the open cone filter.

Ya, I didn't have that. So I might be getting just a tad bit more air volume. All I know is I'm happy that the 7th fixes it, so I know I can swap back if I want to when I get the 7th.

nor_cal51501 Are you going to get a 7th injector? I know a couple of guys who don't run it...but to me, it's pretty much essential...that's just MHO! Anytime you add more air, your going to need more fuel.

Now there is another fuel source...water/meth. They had a nice write up in last months "Toyota" magazine were they installed meth on a S/C 4Runner...I think it was an 98', but don't quote me on that. They used Devil's Owen's (DO) basic set up...they talked very highly of it. I believe the price was somewhere in the $250 range...a lot cheaper then a 7th injector.

I use water/meth on my diesel truck...wow! I love that stuff. It's not that expensive...it's like spending an extra $0.20 per gallon of fuel. Now that's in my diesel...where I'm making an extra 78hp when on water/meth. Also, when I can keep my foot off the throttle...I can pickup an extra 2-2.5 mpg. I'd love to here from someone that runs it on there 4Runner. The article in the magazine, I think they used less than a gallon of water/meth at a 50/50 mixture per tank of gas.

Anyway...just wondering why you weren't running a 7th injector or water/meth?!?

Great questions and info, basically I'm broke. Lol. I want to run the 7th injector, but this supercharger was given to me so my whole idea of save up and buy all the parts then do the install all at once went right out the window. Then of course there's the random stuff that comes up like my p0330 code, so my cars running like shit till I replace the harness and knock sensors(which I'm actually doing at this moment). In order to do that, I also had to buy manifold gaskets. While I was that deep in the motor I figured I should also be doing the valve cover gaskets because I've got basically everything out of the way and my drivers side rear valve cover is weeping. So I digress, yes I really want to get the 7th kit and 2.2 pulley, but money is in short order. I'll have to punch those pennies for a bit before I go spending anymore on my 4Runner.

I guess I can sum this up in a couple of words...being broke sucks...lol!!

Wow...sorry to hear about all your issues since you did your install. I must have missed your post about your p0330 code. Hopefully with the new harness and a new knock sensor...you'll have your 4Runner up and running good again.

I totally understand about the money issue! I bought my S/C back in December, but I wanted to have everything bought and paid for before I did my install. Since then I have bought my 7th injector, T/B kit, valve cover gaskets, set of headers, and powder coated a set of valve covers. I guess I had the same thought as you...if I'm going to tear into the engine, I might as well do everything at once!

I wish you the best today...hopefully everything goes well! Nothing worst than having a new toy...and not being about to play with it!!

Ain't that the truth. When I get home from work I'll be going full throttle on my rebuild and getting it going by tonight, or so that's the plan. I don't forsee any big issues, and thanks. I'll keep y'all posted.
