T4R (2004) - Evaporator Box Replacement

Summary Issue: A/C blows cold air to all vents except the two middle ones (very low pressure).

Diagnosed (2 Opinions): Two local shops have both diagnosed the issue as requiring the entire evaporator box to be replaced. I've been told the actuators work properly, but a plastic part might be the culprit; which I'm told is part of the evaporator box. Both shops have suggested using Toyota OEM for the replacement. Problem is the OEM has been quoted by the local Toyota Dealership as $2200.

I'd rather not have it hard rigged to have the middle two work and sacrifice defrost; or another substitute that I would have to have reversed when the season changes.

Any suggested alternatives to having parts of the evaporator box repaired? Never been to a salvage yard, is that they most economical option if the entire box needs replacement? Is the Evaporator Box considered the Evaporator Housing as well?

Much appreciation for your advice,

I looked into this a few weeks ago, I thought I read that the part wasn't all that expensive but the installation was like an 8 hour ordeal because you have to pull the entire dash out. I believe, in the thread I read, that BlackWorksInc was the one who said it was a huge PITA to change.

Can't remember much more than that, sorry.

Are the doors broken or the actuators? Some of those actuators can only be reached with the dash out of the vehicle.

Do you have any diagrams or part numbers for the parts they are recommending you?

Post Note-

LOL gaterose I just finished typing my reply and BAM! you posted before me and mentioned me! I thought it was funny. :)

Seems like anytime someone has a technical question that stumps us shade tree wannabes, you're there to chime in with a solution.

:thanks:
