Teens Driving 4runners

I just think "they're driving mommy's or daddy's truck" or " mommy and daddy bought them a truck....what the heck were they think of?".
There are many better choices of vehicles for a teen to drive. And I'm a firm believer that a teen should at least partially pay for the vehicle they drive.
As far as "earning" a vehicle due to good grades, my son will earn the "privilege" to drive through good grades. There are many things to be learned in life that are not taught in school (I'm a teacher, by the way...). Helping to pay for the vehicle and insurance can help a teen learn many things about life.
Yes, when I know parents bought a teen a brand new vehicle I think that kid is spoiled and the parents are not really helping the young person in the long run. And stats show that the first vehicle will go through some fender-benders. Why submit a new 4Runner to that?

I don't know of any colleges around here that care if you are a freshman. If you buy a parking permit, you can park there. The problem is that a lot of campuses sell permits for the "right" to park there, not a guaranteed spot. So even with a permit, it could take you an hour to find a spot if it's an overcrowded campus.

My parents bought me my 4runner because a car is too low (apparently? I'm like 5 10. Whatever..), Trucks arn't stable (apparently I guess.. thats their reason they gave me) and SUV's are safer. I do wish, though, that I had color key bumpers instead of the grey cladding. Though i hit a pole backing up.. and it didn't show.
Oh well..
I'm 16 and can't afford a car by myself. I do however buy my fun gadgets by myself (My laptop, sidekick, ipod..). But I think my parents got me the 4Runner because they trust me. Kids at my school have already gotten their licenses suspended, pulled over, and one of them flipped their SUV.
Life lessons. Hmm.. I opened a bank account and applied for a credit card which my dad co signed but i'm paying for myself. I even set myself a limit of 200. That may not sound like a lot but I wanted the low limit. Oh! And i said i would pay for gas if i got a job. Unfortunately no one hires around here and then my dad just said to focus on studys. So i stopped the job looking. Besides I stay in school for 1/3rd of my day... I do agree with the fact that life lessons cannot be learned in school. People at my school call me rich, but I'm not. I just learned how to budget my money.

Unfortuently i got stuck with a 95 f150, im now 18. but about 2 mo before i turned 16 my mom got a 03 ltd to replace the 96 that was being passed down to me. Still to this day i would rather drive the 96 over any other car we own. I know that car inside and out and it has been invaluable to me for learning about cars and responsibly. So much so that im kinda of mad im "stuck" with the ford for the mean time while i can try and save money for a 3gen some time. kind of hard being in college tho.
Oh and the 96 just hit 230k and its now been passed along to my sister. the thing runs like a champ.

Jungle Jim, I'm only 18, and I've always agreed with everything you said about the teen paying for at least part of the vehicle, gas, insurance, etc.
I think every teen should get a job while in high school, unless they have a LOT of trouble with studies, at least something part-time, to learn about money, etc.

lets just say she was ridin hard and put back wet. but i sold it for a profit and bought my 4runner....no help from the parents. all my hard work. And she's treatin' me well. and i did this all when i was 15 so thats all good. (MT's driving age is 15, by the way)

I've dealt with the same thing here. When driving my Civic (it had the navy, HFP body kit, etc. on it) everyone wanted to race me and now that I have my 4Runner I get a lot more respect from other drivers. For example, just trying to switch lanes - people now give me room (more often) whereas before they would speed up to try and not let me in (all the time!) It's a very noticeable difference.
I'm 27, if that matters, and I look like I'm about, ohhh, 18 (I still get proofed for lotto tickets!) and kinda proud of it 'cause I like the younger ladies
Oh... and I do get looks when I get out of my 4Runner from the elders... they probably think I'm driving my parents car. haha.. they're just jealous

I'd like to mention that I bought every vehicle myself with the exception of my first vehicle which was a '91 Ford Escort Wagon LX (was a great starter car) that my dad picked up for me for $3,500 back in 1997. I paid for my own insurance and maintainance on everything. I hate when parents buy their child brand new vehicles. It's not fair to those of us who work hard for what we got.

I am 20 and bought my first Toyota (03 SR5 V8 2WD with 102K) in Aug 07 after having horrible experience with my first car, a 1998 Dodge Avenger. I paid for it myself, and maintain it myself (timing belt, spark plugs, water pump, drive belt, oil, etc.) I have my college decal on the bottom left, and then my TR4.org in the center of my back window. All of my friends have 4Runner envy, even people who have wayyy better cars than me, but I just tell them I made it all possible from hard work. I have always had to work for everything, and it really has paid off.

I'm 26... going on 16 and I used to have pink, purple, green, blue and platinum blonde hair! (in High School) I had piercings and I still rock the spitfire sticker with my T4R.org sticker cause I'm still a lill punk at heart. I love to floor it at stop lights, I like driving like an ass and when I feel like driving/acting my age, I have a nice, respectable and safe suv.
