Temperamental TPS 08 SR5

Wanted to put this to bed. It was the old sensors interfering with the new TPMS sensors in the truck. I tested it over a couple of weeks by leaving them at the office. Every day...without fail...the light comes on when I arrive.

Conclusions:

1) The Gen 4 4Runner can hold more than 5 TPMS codes in the CPU.

2) When you are replacing the old TPMS sensors, you MUST remove the codes from the CPU -- or toss them in the garbage at the shop.

3) The range of the TPMS is EXTRAORDINARY. Seriously, the light will come on within 100 ft of my office -- just like it did at my home. This is why I continued to have issues when I attempted to move them into my basement. It simply wasn't far enough. I'm not sure why they would design these units to give that kind of range, but they do.

So I'm trying to figure out my own TPMS issues. and reading all old threads.

I think what happened to you was that when the shop installed new sensors, they installed the aftermarket kind that "clone" the existing bad sensor. That way they don't actually have to reprogram the ECU to detect different frequencies. When the TPMS unit got within range of the old ones, it was able to read them since the new ones were just copies. The ecu can definitely only store 5 different sensors.

Hope this helps people who have this issue in the future.
