Tested: OEM air filter flows more than any other!

Ok so I had dinner a few weeks ago with some the guys from AEM. They have been doing allot of OEM testing and r&d on the side for more money.

So the Factory air filter from Toyota not only flows more but is also more efficient than a K&N filter or any other gauze and oil filter.

PLUS..... the element that is above the air filter, ya the one everybody was riping out and saying they felt more power, is THE BEST air filtration element on the market today. All the new AEM air filters (grey) are made of this element.

I just noticed the sticky on the top of this forum about the similar topic.

So if anyone wants to sell their upper air filter cover that has the element in it, I will buy it

That does not surprise me at all. Personally I think air intakes or high perf. filters are a waste on a stock vehicle.

I have a K&N FIPK II on my Cobra but its got a blower on it and really pulling air through. Otherwise I think they are a waste of money on anything other than a high perf. vehicle.

The sound is only because they eliminate the resinator box. I did this by biulding a pipe from air box to throttle.

I'll sell you my whole stock air element. It's sitting in my garage doing nothing, plus it comes with a brand new OEM air filter that I had replaced right before K&N was gracious enough to give me a new FIPK for free.

im sorry but theres no way in hell the oem flows more air than an aftermarket...maybe it filters the air better...i know from plumbing that the less turns water makes the faster it flows and i would expect the same with air

Hmmmmmm, I was thinking that second non removalable air filter was there for some reason. Some speculated it to be some type of charcoal filter but it's hard to say as it can 't be removed. I decided to leave mine installed and just change the regular air filter.

Anyways, I've already bought two FRAM air filters from Wal-Mart so I'll have to use them before going back to the OEMs. I change my air filters at 15k miles it's taken me almost three years to amass 21,850 miles. I should be back to OEM by the year 2010.
Hopefully, Toyota will still be stocking them by then.

That send element is very easy to clean. If you agitate iy in water or even hit it on the ground a few times the particles (if any) will come rite out.

You are on the rite track. It is for gases that will exit the engine via the throttle body after the motor has turned off.

Well, the oem dose flow more and filters better. AEM did allot of testing on this stuff. The only better element better than the factory toyota is the secondary filter element we have.

Actually AEM's newest air filters, the non oil ones, are made from that second filter element.

Some just don't believe in test results.
Also, the air only flows as fast as the cylinders use it. This isn't any different, at any given rpm, regardless of the intake system. Don't confuse turns in the intake ducts with air filter flow.

Ok sorry for the newb question but I was under the impression that fram was petty much OEM. So you guys go and get your filters from a toyota dealership every time? Thanks fellas!

YUP. air, oil, cabin, fuel... At least I do. Even engine oil; I get a good deal.

Oil filter is $4, air is $12ish (I think), Cabin is $25ish, "toyota" brand oil is $1.79 quart

Those are great prices. I'll look into that when I do my first oil change. I just picked up my 03 4dr taco yesturday I was checking the fluids and the auto tran fluid seamed a little full for being cold (about 3/4" above "cold" on the dip) . Is this something i should be concerned about or should I just leave it?

Check it hot. That's when it matters if it's overfilled.

BTW, I use Toyota OEM oil and air filters except for the cabin A/C (too expensive.)

The engine vacuum will only allow so much flow as long as there is no restriction. I have collected data from the MAF with & without the air filter in the vehicle. No difference what so ever. I did this at different rpms.

If you do not believe it, then remove the filter and take her for a spin. Don

Allot of Toyotas came with the location for the filter, but no filter in it. ex: 2000+ celicas

That looks very nice and clean.

While cleaning my throttle plate this week, I noticed a lot 3 or 4 coolant hoses attached to the throttle-body. Not sure why they would do this. Any thoughts?
