The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

yeah as does mine . 00 limited. im not exactly the most knowlegable when it comes to this stuff - just a warning. im still learning.

No biggie bud I am learning too, I just have an unfair advantage of living in a house of guys who have been tuning since they have had cars.... It is fun though for sure. I would like too look at your maps for sure if you still have them. Any chance you will make it to Attica at all this summer? I was thinking about putting together a little 3rd gen meet up at the badlands possibly.

I have no idea where the hell that's at. So not sure.

I have the stock pulley so if you a larger one. You will need to extend the number boost and RPM.

I have never gotten past 5 boost and 4500 rpm so couldn't tune past that. So when I'm at that point my AFR are in the low 12s.
I'm mainly around 4 boost and 3500 and that's mid 13s

So now that I have my wideband I am finding that I am running lean at part throttle far before I go into open loop (where the 7th injector comes into play). Soooooooo, I am considering getting the URD AFR calibrator so that I can tune closed loop. Honestly I pretty much never make into open loop unless I am offroading (because mud..) so this should really help to improve the on road drivability of the truck. I am going to pick it up after I get back from Arizona and I will let you guys know how it goes. I personally think for the money the 7th costs we should be able to tune closed loop, but I guess not...

Underdog Racing Development

Don't you have the URD 7th kit? If you do then you HAVE the AFR calibrator built in - it's called the ESC function.

for whatever ridiculous reason my kit came "tuned" straight from URD with the "ESC" function turned off - well basically it was set to only come in at 4psi.

Now I spoke to Gadget many times about this unit and even though I explained to him that I knew the theory and repeatedly asked him what the function did (and I even hinted at what it was doing) - he refused to give a clear answer - Sheesh - we are not all idiots here.

The ESC function (EGO signal conditioner) - simply intercepts (or injects depending on if you have cali emissions) the O2 sensor signal and modifies it to make the ECU "think" that the AFR is slightly lean or at stoich so that it will not see your rich mixture and try to pull the fuel out - this is what your truck, and everyone else's is trying to do in closed loop under boost.

After I changed that setting, I have lots of fuel as soon as the most comes on even at part throttle - I actually need to lean it out since it's too rich now.

I'm in the same boat as you because I almost never floor it so my part throttle is the most important.

Take a look at your URD box, if it has the 2 pink wires, you have the ESC function and most likely need to turn it on at a lower PSI.

What year is your runner? Mine is a 2000 so I have the damn wideband o2's so if I were to try to do that the ecu would read the change in the AFR's and get pissed and trim the fuel off from the main injectors... I personally think it is horseshit that URD doesn't have the AFR calibration settings built into their fic...

Could you verify you have the "AFR" or so-called wideband?

Take a digital multimeter and back-probe the O2 sensor wire at your ECU.

Do this while the engine is warm and running.

The regular o2 sensor will fluctuate between something like .2 to .3 and .7 or .8.

The wideband or "AFR" sensor will stick around 3V or so and only fluctuate very slightly.

To hook up the ESC function you should verify this otherwise it won't work.

To add my own story, I still have VICIOUS ping at medium throttle under boost after 2 tuning sessions. This is TOTAL B.S. for running 5PSI

I am frustrated.

So much so that I borescoped the cylinders today to check for carbon - clean as a whistle.

Session 3 is Tuesday so we shall see.

Here is my setup so far.

- '99 Limited.

- 2nd gen blower - 5PSI pulley

- URD 7th (new)

- Stock exhaust and stock headers with hi flow cat

- Stock intake with resonator delete and K&N drop in (will be installing K&N cold air tomorrow)

- IG22 plugs

I also am tempted to cut off the muffler for a magna flow to see if reduced back pressure will get rid of ping.

I also want a colder thermostat.

Did I mention I'm PISSED?

hmm please post the results on the new spark plugs, mine takes a while to start and i wonder if its the plugs as well.

Plugs did JACK for pinging.

My cliff notes on plugs:

- NGK laser platinum were the best starting - but do not come in a heat range 7

- NGK G-power platinum were the worst running and pinged since they are only HR 6

- Tried "E3" plugs in 2 heat ranges (stock and one colder) and they really helped starting quicker but still invariably pinged (MAYBE, just maybe they colder ones pinged less) I do have a theory why the E3's pinged less, the huge ground electrode can dissipate more heat maybe? Not sure. Took them out.

- Denso IK22, these are the tried and true plug but I am doubting them because they ping just as much as any other...

What may be next up for plugs is the NGK copper HR7 plug BKR7 (maybe even an 8!) or whatever, they are run in so many high HP turbo cars here - so popular that the dyno shop here stocks them in large quantities.

Whatever the outcome, I am still going to be pissed off at this damn S/C project - something so simple and supposedly "bolt-on" is garbage in my eyes.

I'm almost ready to pull it all off and go back to stock. And remember, I've built a fair share of turbo cars over 20+ years.

F**k!

Sorry for the rant.

If anyone cares to listen I will give my 2 cents about my $1000 purchase from URD.

I am really UNSATISFIED with URD on the whole and I must say that their products, while some are nice (and nobody else freaking makes them) are largely left without proper tech support - I'm not sure if they just don't care or what it is but it is quite unprofessional and I will NOT be purchasing anything from them if I can AT ALL help it.

The way I was treated by them is unacceptable and I had to go elsewhere to find proper tech support for THEIR damn product.

I was LIED to and they insisted that their tune was supposed to be just fine - I was told that an AFR of 10.00 going into the 9's was "just great" I was refused proper information about their product - just told to blindly install it "and go".

Their tune also wildly pinged just as bad or worse than stock - if I were just some schmo who blindly listened - I'd have a pile of junk with melted pistons right now.

Dare I say again, I have been in the business of building forced induction vehicles since 1993 and working on cars since the 80's???

I am sure that many have had success with URD - but I sure haven't.

He told me the AEM FIC that I wanted to run (and have successfully tuned many times) was crap - but I feel like I would have had a running truck right now, I will tell you that.

In the end I feel like they are a "necessary evil" at this point since they have the market cornered in some areas. I hope that if they read this, they WILL take it personally and actually DO something about it, I cannot possibly be alone here in ranting about them, I did nothing but give them my money and received nothing but ill treatment and B.S. lies.

Wow angus!?! Sorry you're having such a hard time on this. I'm quite worried now...I purchased my S/C and have been buying all the little goodies to go with it, for a little over a year now...to include the infamous URD 7th injector Kit. I went with a S/C because it's suppose to be "bolt on"?!? Instead of an engine swap that might take several weeks or months to do.

What I don't understand is, Toyota use to bolt these S/C on a brand new truck and say go have fun...and they did. Now 10-12 years later...why can we bolt on a S/C and go have fun. People talked about the stock set up pinging...and advised get the URD 7th kit and you'll have no worries. The kit adds extra fuel and a tune that corrects the ECU. Now that I've sent thousands of dollars...I'm ready to install my S/C and everything to go with it. But now all I read is guys as yourself that are a lot smarter than I am....having serious trouble. Sounds as if everyone now has to "tune" their 4Runners?? What the heck is going on?? Is it the altitude you're at...low octane fuel, crappie gas...which pulley are you using?? All this is starting to making me think I should sell everything and move on???

I truly feel for you. Nothing is worst than asking for help and not getting it. Or worst yet...being treated like you're an idiot!! I hope you're able to figure this out and get your rig back on the road!

Good Luck

Bolt it on already. Yes it's some frustration of not exactly working right and needing to be tuned or something changed.

I think angus just worked himself up.

But I do agree on the complete worthless tech support from URD.

I do not have a 7th kit (Truck came with the S/C and since I have the 5 speed I have been able to keep it from pinging, well sort of....) because I know tuning and didn't think that it was a good solution... As for the ESC function It will not work since in 99 all the 4runners went to a wideband o2 sensor.

I am just really glad that I didn't spend the money on the URD kit... I am ordering an AEM FIC and larger injectors. There are alot of people running this on Custom Tacos and I know AEM's so it is a no brainer...

Russ, my 4runner has had the s/c on it from the dealer and it has 15 years and 90k miles on it. You don't NEED to tune it. It runs just fine at stock boost with out tuning and I know several people not on the forums who have been running them this way for a very long time. Though it may not be entirely ideal it is what it was designed to do. Angus, myself and others on here are tuners and thus stock is just too stock if that makes sense lol. If I wasn't going with more power I would not be doing anything with it since it runs and drives fine with no tuning.

Not all people have the ping. I rarely have it, I have to get the engine super hot after an hour plus of driving and even then it's rare. My 4Runner has had it on for over 100k miles and no issues.

That being said, I do plan on adding fuel mods later on for more power but not to try and rid of any side-effect.

P.S. most of the people who complain about pinging don't run 91 or higher octane fuel.

I sure hope this is the key, I might try installing one today.

Do you even know what your engine temps are currently?

Mine before the SC was 195 with the 180

After with the SC it is 195 with the stant 170 that everyone uses. Or you can do the trd 165iirc.

I have the Stant 160* in mine, was installed by the previous owner who put on the supercharger. No heating issues at all.

Now that I think about it, I've got a spare in the garage. I bought it thinking I would have to swap it out but the one in there was already cooler. You can have it if you want it, but they are dirt cheap on Rock auto.

You are sort of correct - I drove my truck a couple weeks with no fuel mods and I am almost SURE that if I had used the 5PSI pulley it would have been fine.

The issue is that at part throttle it will still run lean - probably just not lean enough to cause problems and that also makes me think that just running the "AFR calibrator" would trick the ECU out of closed loop for a little enrichment.

In fact I'm almost willing to bet that if I ran the Vortech FMU that I tried out with the AFR calibrator, it'd work pretty damn good.

This is why it's so puzzling that now, with the ability to adjust timing - I have the same pinging issue.

Idk all I know is that to get the funcriomallity that the AEM offers me I need both the so called Afr calibrator and the 7th injector. I am going to start to build a piggy back harness this weekend from a old ecu and I will let you guys know how the AEM works. I already have a map from a gentleman over at CT so the bad part will just be the wiring...

So you're running the S/C with no fuel mods right now?

I guess you didn't look into the URD controller (which is just a split second FTC).

It does have the ESC function and it DOES work with either the regular or the toyota "AFR" or wideband (that's not really a wideband). It is just wired differently for the different sensors.

Also - NOT ALL 99 4runners have the wideband, that seems to be only California emissions - mine is 99 federal emissions and it DOES NOT have the wideband.

You should verify yours with a meter so we can see how true it is.

URD told me about 10X that my 99 would have the AFR sensor and - guess what - it doesn't.

I too considered the FIC since we use them here and Boomslang makes a plug / play harness. I may even go that way but I doubt it.

On a side note, I bet 10-15% ethanol in the gas would fix all our trouble.
