The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Cool, so if I order a 2.2 urd this should fix all this right? Nothing looks wrong the the supercharger itself, just the pully? And cool on the bar. Having a drink at home looking over all this stuff!

Ha-ha I would think so but don't quote me on that lol

Im 23 and this is the first time I have been out in my home town, not gonna lie it kind of sucks haha

Any tip or tools to Get the pully back on? I used pully puller to get it off. Speedys garage has a guide and he says use the bolt. Well I have about a 1/2 inch before I can even start threading the bolt on. Don't want to hammer this thing on.

You can just push it on, then use a rubber mallet and socket and tap it down... Once you tighten the nut, it will sinch it down. FYI, you probably know this already, but you'll need fuel mods with the smaller pulley. I had a different but similar issue with my pulley... Only thing I could do was buy a smaller pulley... Now I have to buy a meth kit to remedy my pinging issues.
Removing and installing the pulleys on these things is a real pita... Don't think I was able to get the right torque on the pulley nut. Got close and used a bunch of lock-tight.

I'm good to go with a smaller pully as my used supercharger came with the 7th injector kit. I would just like to feel 'stock' supercharger power before I step it up. I might lightly dremel the inside lip of this pully first but if that does not work will purchase the 2.2 pully along with a short shifter.

I wouldnt advise not dremeling anything and look for the root cause of the problem. Thats how we tackle our engineering problems, and it may be frustrating, but it works :)

Hey everyone sorry to change the topic. But I have a question.

I've installed my supercharger myself about three weeks ago and it's been running stock. Surprisingly I did not have pinging issues as I have a manual. But recently I'm getting a weird rattle noise when in boost in 4th hear at 3500 rpms.

It only happens in 4th gear and sounds like marbles in a can. It sounds like it's coming from my exhaust but it was recently replaced about two months ago and I don't think it's my cat converter because wouldn't it happen in other gears?

A little confused so any thoughts are appreciated:shrug:

it looks like when the PO rebuilt it he pushed the pulley on with a hammer and not the correct pulley pusher so it slid the nose cone shaft through the bearings and into the supercharger (not a big deal, just needs to be pushed back)

so the nose cone shaft is pushed in too far causing your pulley to rub on the housing.

why did no one mention this before? clearly thats what has happened.

HG/LR ping? does it happen around 2200-2800 rpm ish.

I hope that is not the reason as I don't wish to open this thing up. If I had to thought how would a push it back to spec? I got the pully on ( by lightly tapping it on) but when a start to torque it down it again starts rubbing on the housing. Can I just lock-tight the shit out of the bolt and run it not a 38 ft torque?

Yeah I was kinda figuring. Must be something else. Could it be the Dynamic tensioner slipping? I wouldn't think so but when I'm in boost it may be having a hard time keeping up...

Sounds like you're pinging man.... I thought I had some thing rattling in my dash.... Until I realised it only happens when it's hot out and I've been in boost... I'm looking in to Devils own meth kit... Cheapest safe route.

It's not that bad. You can take the nose cone off without removing the supercharger. You'll need some gasket maker some sc oil, and I'd recommend a new coupler.
Then see if you can tap the shaft back to spec... Some one may have a better idea of how the nose is assembled, but I think that might work. Def fix the root of the problem, or you may cause further damage down the road. That sc spins very fast, and something out of tolerance with chew it up fast.

Ok, hopefully someone can chime in on how to do just that if it is in fact the issue. I have a feeling I will open this thing up. If I do I will take pictures and hopefully someone can spot what is wrong.

Yeah, my noise happens when the engine has been hot for awhile.

But I guess my question is that it's been documented that pinging happens in high gear low rpm. But what is considered low rpm? This noise happens between 3 and 4 rpm. I don't think that is low.

I've never heard of anyone having high gear high rpm ping problems.

At the beggining of this thread there is a write up on rebuilding the nose cone. That will be a great place to start. I know I read all of those before I took mine off, changed the coupler, and replaced the oil. They helped immensely!

Pinging can happen at any point really... It's pre-detonation. The high gear low rpm is just the most common/ most likely area. On a hot day after driving in boost on the highway, mine will ping any time in boost, and then only stops a few minutes after things cool down.... At first I was in denial... "Where is that rattling coming from?" I soon put two and two together... Smaller pulley, warm temps.... Need to spend more money!!

I have the stock pulley. Did you notice pinging when you ran stock? Did anyone else on this thread?

I didn't notice any pinging before I tuned it and I am running the stock pulley, but it doesn't mean you will have the same experience nessecarily. You have a manual right? My suggestion is get an wideband monitor your AFR's for a while then choose a tuning solution if you need it, which you may if you live in a hot climate. You can always start looking at tuners be it the AEM F/IC-6 or the URD 7th injector, but I would start by getting that wideband.

Wouldn't the knock sensor help with this situation? I mean I'm not getting any dash lights or error codes.

Unless my knock sensor is bad.
