The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

I have been reading this thread for some time trying to learn as much as possible before I order a sc for my 2001 5vz-fe. It has been VERY helpful!
Can I get some opinions on quality gauges (wideband a/f and boost) that won't break the bank? I would like to install them ahead of the sc installation.
Thanks for your help.

I don't have gauges on my 4Runner yet, but I had a Subaru STi a couple years ago, and I was using the Innovate Motorsports MTXL Wideband, and their boost gauge. Ran those for a few years with no problems. When my car got tuned, the gauge matched the AFR graphs very well, so I would definitely recommend them.
Now they have a digital gauge that has both AFR and boost. More expensive but eliminates a gauge space that could be had for something else.

I have the UEGO wideband fail safe. It's pretty damn cool but ain't cheap at $300+

Pretty customizable with different plates and LED colors you set up on a laptop first. And it records too so you can hook up a laptop after install and with the AEM software (free) it will show you all kinds of stuff. Crazy advanced for our setups, admittedly. But isn't overkill the name of the game?

I am looking at this gauge, http://www.aemelectronics.com/?q=pr...d-gauges/analog-style-wideband-uego-afr-gauge PN: 30-5130 gauge and wideband uego air/fuel controller in one.
Exactly what would I be able to adjust. Obviously a/f, but only above 3000 rpm?
I am new to sc and trying to learn all I can before I purchase.

Hey guys... Been looking for a 3.4 supercharger for a bit now locally, with no luck.

Would prefer a 2nd gen, but would take a first gen in decent condition if the price is right. If anyone knows of any, please message me.

I don't believe a gauge itself will adjust anything. It simply reads data and translates it for you. That being said, the wideband I have has the ability to wire in cut-offs for racing applications (probably not used for something like ours).

Let me give you an example:
Say you have an engine and you want it to blink a warning light at a certain RPM or AFR number to avoid damage. The gauge I have would be able to do that, if all wired in. It could also do things like cut grounds/powers to certain other sensors, again IF all wired in for that.

All you're probably going to do is read data, and use that data to adjust a secondary system such as the URD 7th. An AFR gauge simply allows you to read and/or record real time data to tune ANOTHER system. It essentially takes the guess work out and gives you exact numbers to work with.

All that being said, a supercharger alone is wonderful. Ran mine for 2 years without additional fuel and had minimal problems, I just had to pay a little more attention while driving.

Adding a URD 7th with the "out of the box" tune seems to be sufficient for 95% of the folks on here. I only had to adjust little things in that system to get it where I wanted, and honestly there wasn't THAT much of a difference.

I always say, don't expect these things to run like a Chevy V8. It just doesn't have that kind of a feel. It will have more power. Noticeable power. But keep in mind it's a heavy rig, smaller V6 and the boost numbers are like 6-8 psi on a stock pulley. Pretty safe overall, and it will likely NEVER feel like a race car.

Please chime in anyone, if you're experiencing different results.

I'm not from that area but it seems like a decent price for the PNW. Looks clean, I'd go sniff it out if I were in the market.

This has been on craigslist for several weeks now and I've wanted to go out and look at it, but being that it's been listed for so long, it makes me wonder why it hasn't been snatched up. And please don't swoop this up, I've been hunting for the past month to get a clean 4runner, lol

Thoughts?

I don't think it's in as good of shape as the seller is indicating. The air intake looks to be cracked and it's held on by literal duct tape. I think you might find a few other things wrong with it. But if you are ok with some repairs, it's worth at least looking at it. I would bring some sort of code reader with you though.

And... third post in a row from me!

Just had some Doug Thorley headers put on. Computer needs to adjust a little for the change in air flow but liking what I see so far. The engine is not working as hard, in a few days I'll do some WOT pulls and post up with some photos.

I wish I had taken a code reader with me when I purchased my current 4Runner. I would have been able to directly argue the seller down at least a grand on sell price due to some of the codes that were being thrown.

I have been looking out for some headers as an upgrade down the road. How bad was the install? What kind of response are you seeing so far?

Thanks! My big thing was the fact that it's been on CL for so long. It looks great, but I've passed on three I've looked at so far, so may as well continue being picky. Gonna let this one go for now...

Question of Curiosity

Since the brake booster is meant to use vacuum and the brake booster is hooked up to the supercharger, why doesn't the pressure from the s/c damage the booster?
