The 3.4L TRD Supercharger Thread

Quick questions for you guys that are currently supercharged. I may go the supercharged route in the near future. Any reliability issues vs stock? Maintenance cycles? Upgraded pulley and 7th injector necessary when transitioning to supercharged?

Thanks in advanced.

1) no. Use premium fuel.

2) 30-50K nose cone fluid, 100k nose cone kit, bearings/rebuild as needed. Some go 200K on OG bearings. Mines near 50K on SC and it's flawless.

3) no. Runs great stock. Add more mods as desired. And HAVE FUN!

That's awesome. Mine only has 200xxx miles and all I run in it is 91 octane also (only thing available) it isn't horribly bad but I do encounter it.

Would it matter how many miles the engine has to install the supercharger? I am looking into purchasing an '00 SR5 manual with 260k miles.

You could do a simple compression check for the cylinders to make sure the engine is happy, but other than than install it & have fun. It doesn't cause extreme stress on the engine with the stock pulley, 6 PSI isn't anything crazy.

326k miles. Engine runs perfect. Supercharger has been rebuilt once before. I am all stock and run 91 octane only. I replaced the spark plugs and fuel filter at the time of the supercharger install and I have yet to encounter and problems with pinging or anything like that.

Question! where did you plug the PVC pipe vacuum hose into and what about the open port in rear of the supercharger. I have an 01 with the same SC and trying to get the vacuum hoses correct.

I routed it behind the superchrger and it plugs into a port near the brake master cylinder/ brake module thing. As far as the ports I just used simple vacuum plugs for the ones I did not need. I plan on installing a boost gauge soon and I will use that port. I can try to get some pictures tomorrow when it light out

Boost port should be plugged into the top of the fuel pressure regulator (FPR). It gives you a tad bit more fuel pressure which helps at heavy throttle conditions. When you add a boost gauge just add a t fitting to it but keep it on the FPR.

I wanted to check back in with everyone and say that I have fixed the headgasket on the truck and did a timing belt service. No cracked heads just a busted gasket on the middle cylinder.

Here is to more boost in the future.

Interesting it was the middle. Normally these fail on cylinder 5 or 6 in the back since those see a lot of head with the x-over pipe right behind them.

Hey 4runner dudes, I'm getting closer to being able to shoot the breeze regarding tuning and I'm thinking about going the AEM FIC 6 / boomslang route. I've got the sc installed and just redoing the rear suspension before I can take it out and test it out a little - sounds mean as heck with a set of doug thorley headers and zero exhaust after that haha. Chasing down a weird climbing idle all the way up to 2500, but so far I rebuild the throttle body and haven't run it since.

Right now I'm asking for a friend who has a non-TRD branded sc and is up for his first smog check in a month. He's asked magnusson about how to get a carb sticker and they were basically no help. He's got a badass truck and is a smart dude. He should be able to get it taken care of with a little guidance. Here's his truck.

1st Gen on 37's, Long Travel. Completion Date: TBD | Tacoma World

Seized Pulley

Just replaced my nose cone and dropped down to a 2.1" URD pulley. Old pulley (2.2" URD) is seized. Any recommendations for removal? So far soaking in PB Blaster, torch and puller have only proven to destroy the pulley....it hasn't budged a bit. I had thought I would rebuild this nose and keep it as a spare but maybe it isn't worth it. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Wow, that's absolutely nuts. Did the keyed slot get all messed up? It should have just slid right off. Usually it's just the nut that gives a fight. Maybe the nut was over-torqued? I think it's only supposed to be around 35 lbs/ft.

At this point, I would consider the nose cone a complete loss. Even if you get the pulley off the shaft will almost certainly be damaged.

I concur with nuts! Took a 3’ breaker bar and vice grips to free the nut. The last person to mess with this was magnuson when I sent the whole S/C in for a rebuild a few years back. I would think they would think they would know their own torque specs but who knows. Keyed slot is fine...

For those that have rebuilt the snouts on your superchargers, where did you source parts and did you use ceramic ball bearings or the standard ones? Only ceramic ones I can find are from Rolling Performance and I don’t know if they really are worth it. Also, any comments on quality? I have been looking at kits from Rolling Performance, Jon Bond Performance, High Speed Lab, PSE supercharges.

Rolling Performance ceramic kit goes for $195

Jon Bond Performance (non-cermaic kit) goes for $138.40
Extended drive snout rebuild kit MP45, MP62, MP90, MP112, MP122 Extended drive snout rebuild kit MP45, MP62, MP90, MP112, MP122 [m ext drive rebuild kit] - $138.40 : Jon Bond Performance, The Worlds Premier Supercharger Rebuilder and Parts Store

High Speed Lab (non-ceramic, comes with needle bearings) goes for $119

PSE superchargers ??? (not a very good website)

Since charging my 3rd gen, I've been getting horrible gas milage. I've done some searches on here and have tried several things before posting. I'm currently getting 9.5-10 mpg in the city and 11-12 hwy driving.
Below is my setup.
2001 Auto 4WD
3" lift
33" tires (bfg)
New Maf sensor
New Upstream 02 sensor (denso)
Stock TRD Supercharger (about 15k miles ago)
ARB Bumper w/ winch
Front and mid skids
Armored Rear bumper with swing out 5th wheel.
Stock fuel management
No CEL

Is this normal? What are you guys getting? I've seen multiple guys with my setup still getting close to 16-17miles per gallon on the hwy.

You can find other peoples gas mileages but I can give you mine for reference:
2000 Auto 4WD, TRD Supercharger (Black), URD 2.2 Pulley and 7th Kit. Currently have a knock sensor CEL and without any experience of other 4Runners, I don't think everything is running at 100%. I still manage on average 220miles on a full tank (93) of combined highway/urban driving, typically 13gallons per fillup - on average that's pretty much bang on 17mpg. Highway only I get 20+, and as I said I'm sure there's room for improvement in my setup as I dont think it's running perfectly (tune etc).

Speaking of - can anybody recommend a shop in MD that is familiar with working on a S/Cd 4runner - especially on that has the URD add-ons? I have the history of this truck and I believe Gadget himself has looked it over/helped set it up according to the previous owner.

I'm going to be a due a timing belt soon so am prepping for a bit of an overhaul, including replacing/updating sensors, gaskets, any cracked lines, and a supercharger rebuild + whatever else is needed. Would then require it to be set-up and tuned properly. I can even drive to the URD offices but I don't think they have a workshop, I believe they're just a parts seller? Anybody recommend a place to go for all this? Thank you!

Supercharger coating flaking

Also - anybody have issues with the black coating flaking off their supercharger? Mine is in pretty bad shape and is a blight on my engine bay! Per my previous post, while it's out getting re-built I'd like to refinish the paint too, anybody have any experience of this?
Much appreciated :bluejump:

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a new Magnuson unit as the ones I'm finding used are still asking quite a bit and I prefer something with a warranty that I don't have to worry about rebuilding.

Does the Magnuson kit include everything?

This is going on a '98 with 250k miles FWIW.
