That is aftermarket for seat bottom raise n lower, a function on Limited's seats.

Hey all, I’ve been wanting a gen 3 runner for well over 10 years now. I’m finally to a point where I’m ready to give up my “modern” car and payment to buy a gem 3. I only average 5-7k miles a year but drive roughly 2 hour trips almost each weekend.
Locally one has popped up that caught my eye. This guy lives near me and I’ve seen how he takes care of the various cars he owns. He’s working on something and doing some sort of maintenance constantly between the 4-5 cars he has.
He’s listed a 98 SR5, 4x4, no locker, leather, sunroof, with 177k miles and a clean title. Frame also looks very clean for the year. Asking price is right at $10k but he said he would be willing to negotiate. I will attach a link to pictures/a video of the frame. Is this price high? They have constantly been creeping up in price around me and unless I’m going 300k+ miles you rarely see them for less than $8k. Any thoughts? I don’t mind doing routine maintenance, just need something that will be reliable and won’t leave me stranded.

Really depends on where your located. Where I'm at (Portland OR) that would be sold within a day if not hours for that price assuming nothing's wrong with it. From what I can see in the pics, it looks like a clean truck, frame looks good from the video which may make it worth more of your in the rust belt. FWIW I sold a 250k mi 2000 limited for $8500 that was in much worse overall condition than that truck appears to be in. As with all used cars, I'd check Carfax, see what service records he has and if anythings overdue / needs to be done you can use that as a negotiation point. From what I've been seeing, I think these trucks reached the lowest prices they'll be at a couple years ago, and are now starting to go up in price since they're considered somewhat of a "modern classic" to many.
Like I said though, location is key in terms of price, and what's a 10k truck on the west coast may be a $5k truck in the Midwest for example, so I'd compare with other local prices. Just my $.02

I'd be curious why the passenger side airbag looks to be a different color than the rest of the dash

Ah good eye. He said it’s a clean title but I suppose he could have done the repairs off the book. I had attributed the air bag being a different color due to the different material it’s made out of. My old Tacoma sort of did that after a few years but was never in a wreck. That’s interesting.

100%, bumper and filler panels are completely tweaked as well.
Though that does have me thinking what a black airbag would look like with the tan interior, instead of grey... might not look too bad

Hi all new to here and 1st post! I'm currently in the market for a 3rd Gen 4Runner and hoping to get some insight and opinions! Have been researching common problems and things to look out for while inspecting these cars and might of come across one.
So last weekend I went to look at a 1996 Limited and seemed like it is in great condition. Minimal rust and took it for a test drive. Only concerns were around 70-80 the wheel shook a bit. Owner mentioned low tire pressure or potential alignment issue or wheel balance. Any thoughts?

Also, seems like the interior is in immaculate condition. Almost too good to be true and I was wondering if they were covers or redone at some point.

The steering wheel of my '97 Limited shook horribly at highway speeds when I first bought the truck. A new set of tires fixed the issue.
As for seats, you can get very nice aftermarket leather panels to replace torn original leather, it looks just like OEM.

When I swapped racks on a 250k mi truck, I soaked in PB Blaster and than whacked it with a mallet until it broke free. I'm not in the rust belt, but it was pretty seized on I'm guessing from age and mileage. Once off, I cleaned up the threads and used lithium grease to help get it on the new rack

Yes you can but, you have to remove the inner tie rod to do it. If you're pulling the inners off and they are old and floppy, you might as well replace them too.
I had to replace one, and I only had to remove the outer tie rod to do it.

A picture tells a thousand words. Learn to read the picture, follow dashed lines indicates flow of assembly.
Large end of boot & clamp to rack housing, rack and ITRE go to center of rack housing is a known given.
ITRE & boot size difference is apparent one goes inside the other. Comparing parts list and what you're looking at
laying on your back helps learn to read/visualize picture and your eyes don't lie.
Print is clear boot can be changed without removing ITRE. :hiding:
