How big a lift for 33's for 3rd gen 4R?
Same Q for 35's?
Whats the best value lift kit available?

Normal lift is 3” for 33s
However a little trimming and body lift may be required for zero rubbing while off roaring

35s. Bumpers and you’re cutting into the firewall

In order to fit any tire bigger than stock AND still be able to use the full suspension range you need to clearance the wheel well. Larger tires will require more clearance. Wheel width and backspacing/offset will affect clearance as well.

For anyone that has cut out the spare tire crossmember, did you brace the frame elsewhere and how significantly?

I'm about to chop mine for storage space and im thinking i can fit a pretty solid brace near my homemade hitch/swingout brace but im not sure i need much.

i did search btw

I would think it would be stronger with the Panhard crossmember and a aftermarket tow rated rear hitch and no spare tire cross member than it would be in factory form with only a Panhard cross member and spare tire cross member IMO. The rear hitch is a beefy cross memeber on its own and practically reaches the spare tire cross member.

see thats what i figured and mine is beefed up beyond a regular hitch in order to support my swing out so i think i'd be ok without but just making sure im not crazy for thinking that way.

I've been watching a few threads with people that install the ford tanks in the back. They have to remove the spare tire carrier and bracket, but I don't remember seeing anyone reinforce where they removed the spare tire carrier and brace.

So just trim the rust off to fit bigger tire.

I have found some nice 3rd gens around.

Tablet Holder

Bought a tablet to specifically run Gaia while roaming the FS roads.

What are some proven setups out there that can handle mounting?

I imagine all the suction cup setups I am finding would not be adequate. Thanks,

After doing my spare tire swing out and a new stereo, I need to wire up a backup camera and a new license plate light. I was thinking about just splicing into the wires in the tail light. For the backup camera, the wires going to my back up lights are pink with a blue stripe and white with a blue stripe. Which one is power?

For the license plate light, the wires are green, green with a white stripe a d white with a blue stripe. Same question, which one is power?

These are on the right (passenger) side of the vehicle.

Any other suggestions instead of splicing into the wires?

So I work in video production and this design will definitely do the trick. I mount 30lb+ camera rigs with these guys, it will definitely hold an ipad with the correct arm. And if you use an adapter plate you can mount more 1/4" accessories. I'm going to use this for a TPMS monitor likely. May be easy enough to make a proper mount for a ScanGuage with a like set up as well.

Will make a thread about it eventually.

Any pics of the swing out?

Magnefine VS Spin-on filter for ATF

I’m getting ready to install an external ATF cooler (ran in series), and I’d like to add a filter since I’ll already be down there running hoses anyway.

I know a lot of people here are running Magnefine filters for both ATF and PS.

Just curious about pros/cons of magnefine vs spin-on style, and if anyone has A/B tested them.

This was the closest thing I found to an answer: Inline spin on filter vs Magnefine | Bob Is The Oil Guy

I was thinking: radiator -> external cooler -> filter -> transmission

Spin on mount: Amazon.com: Derale 25708 Remote Filter Mount Kit: Automotive

Thanks!!

I got the license plate light figured out, just gotta figure out the camera now. It’s all hooked up, just no video. The pink wire with blue stripe is the power to the cam, I’m thinking it’s a ground somewhere.

What was the stock height of the 3rd gen when they were made? I know 99 talls were the highest, and 00-02 were the shortest. Just curious what the originals heights actually were.

Check Engine Light

Hello folks!

I just bought my first 3rd Gen, my first car ever, about a week ago and I’m a proper beginner. 2 nights ago, my Check Engine Light came on leaving the grocery store. It was running fine and nothing had changed. The next morning, I went to AutoZone and plugged in their scanner and it came back with nothing. When I turned the car back on, the CEL was out.

Fast forward a few hours and errands later, and the CEL came back on. Same as before, not idling or running differently than before.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? Like I said, I’m a complete beginner to 3rd gens and cars in general so any help is much appreciated. I know that the PO did the Cat and O2 sensors in the last year. Also my oil is quite low, not sure if that could have any relation.

Anyways, thanks a ton! I’m hopeful one of you has an answer :)

You're going to need to pull the codes in order to diagnose the problem. If you don't want to keep going back to autozone, you can get a cheap bluetooth OBD2 scanner that will connect to your phone and use torque to pull codes.

Without a code it will be hard to pinpoint what's going on. Its a new to you truck. so general maintenence would be a high prority. Was the maintenance up to date from the buyer? Plugs and wires, cleaning the maf, replacing fluids, replacing the lower ball joints if they havent been replaced in the last 100k or so. greasing the drive shafts joints. These trucks will last a long time with scheduled maintenance.

Goode info in the following thread.
