The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

I mean if you were running a filter double the size or if you had some newer, more sensitive car - yeah I could potentially see that - but the difference between the two isn't that large all things considered. I take a lot of oil discussion with a big grain of salt; case in point being the BOITG forum. Some of those guys are straight geniuses and know just about everything there possibly is to know about oil, additives, filters, what have you - but then they turn right around and recommend Fram above anything else

Thanks for the feedback. Heh, Fram... I cry.

What's going in fellow 3rd gen owners, I'm new to the community and am looking for some guidance and most updated info on the dreaded tundra trd front coil lift.

I purchased this coils already but can not seem to find the proper strut to use if some guidance could be given I would greatly appreciate this.
You need adjustable front shocks for a 1999-2006 Toyota Tundra. Popular choice is Bilstein BIL-24-261425. You'll also need the top strut hat/mount/bushing/hardware for a 1996-2002 4Runner to complete the shock/strut assembly.

2001 limited

I currently have a 2020 limited and am considering buying this 2001 limited 4Runner and would appreciate opinions. 2001 limited, 102,000 miles, 1 owner vehicle. The owner has serviced the vehicle every 6 mos. The vehicle was purchased new in Minnesota, after 18 mos the owners moved to California and has been there ever since. 18,000

Personally I would instead take that $18k and buy some sense :pound:
Genuinely and honestly asking here: what makes you believe that is worth that kind of money? It seems like every month thse cars cost more and more but everyone questions the pricetag less and less; the prices get worse but the interest grows bigger. It makes absolutely no sense, even from the inside

Repos are current going through the roof as defaults are on the upswing... and this is the Start of a readjustment period. Used car prices are going to tank in the next year (if trends follow sub-prime loan balloon bursts in other markets). I sure as heck wouldn't spend that kind of money on a 3rd gen 4runner ~ that's honest collector car money, something with Limited production runs (not 750 million units sold in the US alone).

Miles are too high to be a in the desirable range for "survivor collector". Condition is too nice to be a daily driver. It's treading no-mans land, fishing for the one person out of a couple billion who's foolish enough to part with that kind of money for something so unremarkable.

I knew 3rd gens were pretty common, but I didn't realize that everyone in the US bought at least 2 of them.

I think it's pretty simple: When the vehicle is in this good of condition then it just comes down to what you're willing to pay in return for what you plan to get out of it.

If you want a hunting truck, or a rock crawler, or a camping truck then definitely get a less pristine 3rd Gen for way cheaper and mod it to your heart's desire with the money you've saved.

If you want to replace your 2020 with the 2001, then it probably makes more sense, but it still might be the wrong road to go down.

Bottom line: If you really want it, have the money to buy it, and will use it, then it's a super clean 3rd Gen that'll last you a long time.

Hope that helps some

This is basically my front setup now with Toytec/Eibach 620# coils.

The question I would be asking is why that spring specifically? Do you plan to weigh down the front end considerably?

I would offer them $12K if you really want it as a collector / driver. I'd personally be more excited if it were a 2000 vs 2001/2

I've been on property of a man who has 30+ ...
You wanna talk weird, on my drive from work I pass by a home with half a dozen 80s and 90s Alfas. But I suppose that's necessary if you want to keep one running

Thanks Devbot and Brian. I bought a 96 with 300k from my elderly neighbor a couple months ago. I figured it can be my learning fixer/beater until I can afford something with lower mileage. I've seen prices here drop when gas went up - I'll be watching and saving to see if other 3rd Gens hit the market

For only $21.99, I’m impressed. And it doesn’t even bother me that they aren’t OEM Toyota. Does anyone have any experiences with these?

I don't have any experience with these but for the price can't go wrong. I just ordered them as backup.

Have you ever replaced them before? I never have and am pretty sure they’re the originals. I’d love to have strong shocks back there so it stays open full time when I’m using the trunk area.

2001 SR5 4WD Possible Transmission Issues Question

New to the group. Hope I am doing the format correctly. Sorry for the long post.

Issue : Popped these codes PO773 and P1780

Nothing happened for awhile and then when it started getting hot out the SUV would make some heavy clunking which you could feel while driving and then slip out of gear. When that happened the RPMs would rev up being out of gear. I pulled over and was able to limp it home in 1st gear. If I tried to go any faster it would slip out of gear again. The next day when it was cold in the morning I had no issues. Drove it to work. Then it sat in the hot sun all day and the original issue happened again.

So I researched the codes and figured it had to be P0773 which is the TCM ( transmission control module). I ordered a new one and replaced it. The same exact thing is happening. I noticed two more solenoids located next to the TCM when I dropped the tranny pan. I should’ve replaced those as well but I figured I would ask everyone in here their thoughts before I drop the pan again.

The P1780 error is a park/neutral switch code. This kind of makes sense because if I am driving and the car thinks its in neutral it would slip out of gear and the RPMs woukd go up. But then if I slow down why would that reset it and allow me to drive in first at lower RPMs?

On a side not. On the dash the VSC OFF and VSC Trac lights have been on for awhile as well.

Any information helping me solve this issue would greatly be appreciated! If I can provide any more information please let me know. I am desperate to figure this out. Sucks asking for rides everyday! Thank you.
