I do not like the new 4runner. I know that is my opinion I have the 2005 V8 sr5 I love my runner. Hopefully the 5th gen. will get the V8 in the future. Guess I will have to wait until then. Peace Out.

Now that it is out and I looked at the specs, I can't help but think how close it is to the 4th gen. It is almost, like they made a few changes and left it pretty much the same.
I do like the trunk is larger and the overall look is OK. Going with a 4 cyl in a heavier vehicle is a little wierd. As far as the V8, that is just the way it goes.

Well I do like the Cargo area that is cool. I feel as though Toyota could have done a better redesign with a Rugged Suv like the 4Runner.To me it looks 2 like a Honda Pilot sorry. Will wait maybe it will grow on me latter.

money no object, it's clear it's an improvement esp for those who don't want the v8 --> buy it.
so let's try to avoid huddling around the 4th gen totem pole. toyota made a huge leap from the 3rd to 4th and this is a bit more evolutionary than revolutionary and understandably so. we're in a recession. gas prices have gone up significantly. functionality has increased. the new look is much more rugged and unique than the 4th gen design. it looks newer. it's a testament to how good the 4th gen is/was.
we can all still be very happy with our 4th gens. we didn't buy a toyota product because we didn't buy into its long term value. we consistently tout the truck's reliability which implies that we were always planning on keeping the thing for a long time with complete peace of mind.
in my case, a toyota is a pure utility car. id idn't get the 4runner to keep up with the joneses. i bought it because im not image conscious when driving to work, picking up stuff at costco, helping friends move crap, going on road trips.
the 4th gen will do all the above with aplomb. so will the 5th gen. as much as they are different, they are the same.
the upgrade is absolutely not worth it for me. but i can be happy for those picking up the new 5th gen for their own reasons.
with all that said, the v8 is a must for me.

Overall I think it looks like an OK SUV. I agree with most of you on here with V8'S- gotta love the 2extra cylinders and a little rumble. But overall (until I see one on the road)- my opinion is Toyota did such a great job on the FJ cruiser to make it look so different and also the numerous Gen's of the 4runner- but the 5th Gen looks like something Mitsubishi would make- Like it's a new tougher Outlander or something...

Whatever. I think it looks like a dodge mated with a scion. Fugly.
That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. Many of us, however, think Toyota dropped the ball on some things and moved backwards -- for me, most notably the lack of a Torsen center diff on the SR5 and TE trim lines.guys there's 0 need to chew up the new 5th gen, man!

That's what bothers me the most about the 5th beyond the looks, the drivetrain options. Have to buy according to trim for drivetrain. No rear locker on a full-time 4WD and multi-mode.

I have to totally agree with you on this.
There isn't much in the 5th Gen that I would call an improvement or advancement over the 4th Gen.

Once the dealers around here get some in stock, I plan on going in and telling them pretty much what everybody is saying. That the 4th gen was the high watermark (at least in my eyes) and the vehicle has taken a step (or two) backwards, especially with the drivetrain. I figure letting the sales manager or GM (who actually care about how well all of their models are selling) know exactly why I'm not planning on buying a new 4Runner is the best chance of getting the message to somebody who helps shape the decisions with Toyota. Hopefully there are enough similar comments that we see some improvement in a mid-cycle update and Toyota goes "back to the future".
Oh yeah, I forgot this little nugget.
The Ltd with it's P245/60R20 tires.....try and go find a replacement tire.
Toyota is using a custom tire. I couldn't find anything by any manufacturer so I called Tire Rack and they confirmed that this is a unique size. They also told me that Toyota did the same thing with the Highlander----uses 19's on the Ltd. that only come in one tire.
Anybody want to try and defend Toyota on that one?

Don't bother. Car companies don't listen to dealers. Send a letter directly to Toyota USA. That will have far more impact than talking to a stealership.

Interesting that most of the people who don't like the 5th gen are 4th gen owners. I wonder, if we broke down those who liked the 5th gen and those who didn't, by the generation of 4runner they drive, how it would come out?
I drive a 3rd gen runner, by choice. I looked at a bunch of 4th gen models but couldn't pull the trigger. I just couldn't drop 20 grand on a vehicle that would need suspension mods right out of the box in order to do even the more mild trails around here. And the electronic T-case dial was annoying to me.
I like the 5th gen's higher stance and more rugged appearance. I think when Toyota made the 4th gen they concentrated too much on making it low and comfortable on the street, which really compromised the off-road ability. I wonder if Toyota already had the FJC on the drawing boards when they came out with the 4th gen and figured that the hardcore 'wheelers would go with the FJC while the more "suburban" drivers would pick the 4runner.
The new 4runner seems to be trying to split the difference, which would make sense if what I've heard about the FJC is true (i.e. that it will not be renewed.)

Wow, that is amazing. I checked Discount Tire and they have no tires. I am trying to think what are the advantages of that tire on a 4Runner. It is such a low profile tire, (for a SUV). You get really good handling, which is really not needed in a SUV and a very harsh ride.

Agree--I see no reason for it, although I'm sure some "genius" thinks there must be a market for it.
On a more practical note, if you have one of these Ltd's with this size tire, you have no options for switching these out. I guess you would have to go to the dealer to even get a replacement if you had a blowout or total tire failure. I know EVENTUALLY there will be tires in this size available, but if this is the only vehicle currently using this size and its a low volume seller at that, how many tire companies are going to rush to manufacture a tire?
I know you could switch out the wheels ($$$$$$) and go with another size, but I still don't get why Toyota did this.
And you are also far more likely to bend those wheels in potholes. If I got a 5th gen limited, the first thing I'd do would be to get rid of those wheels and tires.
