The Straight Story on Chipped Keys

I know there are a couple of threads on making duplicate keys, but they were a little hard to follow, and at times said contradictory things. Plus the keys I bought themselves said that a locksmith would have to program them--NOT!

The short story is that if you buy these keys (or similar keys with the 4D-67 Transponder Chip): Amazon you only need to have the keys cut (cheap!) and then program your car manually yourself to recognize the keys with the ol' in/out and open/shut. Here

I just got back from the locksmith--who convinced me that I needed his help to "program" a key. But when I got back he said that he only had to program the car to recognize the key. So I had him cut my other chipped blank and programmed it myself.

This seemed to be well known over in 3rd Gen when I had mine last year....
I'm not sure why there is so much misinformation surrounding this.

Yes- You can buy your own chipped keys that work- regardless of what Toyota says.

Yes- Anyone can cut them for you

NO- You dont need anyone's help except the MASTER CHIPPED KEY for your vehicle

Yes-Programming instructions are readily available on the internet.

Also Yes- You might feel like an idiot trying to get the process to work if cant seem to get it right.


ANNNNNNNDDDDD.......If you buy your vehicle used and it comes with only a valet key...It will cost you about $250-300 for the Immobilizer reset and program a new master key

(Which Toyota will try to charge you out the wahoo for. I'd at least buy an internet chipped key and bring it in and ask them to try it first. My stealer said they would try)

Easiest way to make duplicate keys?

Buy new Key blank

Insert blank key into rear hatch door

Go into the driver's seat and complete the following sequence.
-depress brake pedal 6 times rapidly
-lock the door
-unlock the door
-lock the door again while powering down the back passenger window
-open and close the glove compartment 3 times
-roll the back passenger window back up 2/3rds of the way
-honk the horn 5 times for 2 full seconds each time
-hold down the odometer reset while turning on the radio
-tune the radio to FM 93.3 and then adjust the volume to level 3
-push the gas pedal to the floor and hold it there for 36 seconds
-turn the radio back off while rolling up the back passenger window the rest of the way
-unlock the door and let yourself out
-remove the new key blank from your rear hatch, and the automatic lock tumbler cutter system will have ground the key to match your vehicle's locks.

Couldn't be simpler really..
