The The CHP can go screw themselves! Damn snow chains..

Sounds like another evil ploy by the government to generate revenue. I would think a warning sign advising the use of chains, but require it???? But I have a question, ....., what are tire chains? (j/k) - you couldn't find of set of them for sale around here anywhere.
 
I went by a CHP yesterday changing a tire for somebody on the side of hwy 99. I was impressed.

In my area they don't plow much, the don't require chains and the vehicles on the roads are Subaru's, people think because of some stupid AD they here about them that they will plow through a foot of snow, the other 5% of the vehicle on the roads are plows, jeeps and me.
 
Well if you really want to see some bad snow driving, come to Texas today. Expecting 3-6 inches of the white stuff in Dallas today, and I need to make it to the airport to (maybe) fly to Houston to pick up my 4Runner! Roads aren't too bad yet, but I'm sure there will be countless rednecks in lifted 2WD pickups who think they can go as fast as they want to. Wish me luck!

Oh, and as a former CA resident, I totally get where you're coming from in the OP!

The CHP thinks if they make everyone on the road put their chains on regardless of where they're from, what kind of vehicle they have, or their driving experience in snowy conditions, then magically everything will be safe and no one will get stuck. The reality is the idiots still get stuck, still block the roads (with their chains on), and still think stopping in the middle of an intersection is the best place to tighten or re-install their chains. Nothing is different except now they expect me with my very capable 4runner to uselessly put my chains on too. And if I don't, I will face up to a $700 fine. Yes, $700 if I'm "caught" driving without them on. Flatlanders have always been required to put chains on before going up the mountain, now the only difference is that the locals who don't crash and know how to drive in bad conditions have to also for no reason.

I'm sorry, but I don't need the f*cking government deciding for me when it's too unsafe to drive my 4runner especially when they do not take experience or the vehicle being driven into consideration. Hell, I've rescued a Brinks amoured car in the snow before that was carrying over $1,000,000 cash with my 4runner and no chains on. The Brinks drivers were so happy that they sent me a $300 check as a thank you and informed me how much $$ they were carrying at the time and how much was at risk. But apparently I'm the "risk" on the road now.

They could just as easily turn the flatlanders around and tell them come back when the roads are clear, but they don't. They purposely let them up to make a mess out of our streets and then try to look like they're solving the problem by misdirecting the attention to the locals. You see, they like to "trap" people up here - get em up here while it's snowing and hopefully they will get snowed in their hotels overnight and then have nothing better to do than spend money in town. But they underestimate their stupidity. The flatlanders think their Mercedes coupe can get through 2 ft of snow so they try to venture out to explore and then they crash - big freakin surprise! And low and behold, the road will close because 17 other douchebags had the same idea.

It just think it's bullshit that I have some of the best snow tires $$ can buy and more than twice as much ground clearance than an average car. And if that's not enough I have 4WD, and if that's not enough I have 4LO, and if that's not enough I have a diff locker, and if that's not enough I have 18 years of experience in this sh*t. So Officer Dingleberry and his crew of numbnuts can go to hell, I WILL NOT PUT MY CHAINS ON UNLESS I DEEM THEY ARE NECESSARY.

I personally feel that i should be allowed a higher maximum speed limit than the soccer mom one lane over putting on her makeup with 5 kids jumping around in the back. I have a performance car(not the 4runner) with superior brakes and suspension, sticky tires, etc...not to mention i have training from 10 high speed driving events. I can drive 100mph safer than she can do 50mph, and id be more than willing to pay for a test that would allow for my "special speed limit" provided i passed. The law is set for the masses, unfortunately we must all adhere.

Here's a hypothetical/real conversation after being pulled over.

Driver: "I'm sorry officer, those speed ruts are just awful and I try to use side to side motion to avoid them".

Trooper: "Yes, they're bad but you might just want to make a decision to ride in them or ride outside them" How are you liking those Hakkapelittas'?

Driver: " I like em fine thanks. OH shit I forgot to tell you I have a gun in the car. It's a handgun, I just keep it to scare of bears and such".

Trooper: "Do you have the gun with you?"

Driver: "Yup, would you like to see it?".

Trooper: "Thats ok but in the future be sure to mention that first thing".

Driver: " You bet".

Trooper: "Drive safe now. Let me put on the lights so you can enter the highway a little easier behind me". It's a slippery mess today".

Driver:" Thanks man. Appreciate meeting you."

I have always though they should "rate" (and restrict) licenses based on driving ability. I too would love to take a test to be able to have more driving privileges like going faster, and to add to that they should have a "snow" license. Not only would it generate revenue if they charged a reasonable fee to take the tests, but it would truly save lives IMO by keeping the morons off the road when they have no business there and make driving a better experience for everybody who deserves it. Good thoughts...

I agree completely. Kalifornia is becoming more like the former USSR and less like a free state every year. Hell, I haven't even been able find a box of .22s around here for over a year, no joke! AK looks more and more enticing everyday. Not to mention how beautiful and untouched it is. I envy you guys!

If you think thats bad, dumb CHP makes my put chains on all axles of the big rig and trailer on crap you could drive on blindfolded. They obviously don't know what the roads are like in the winter in Wyoming and Montana..

I LOVE Cali, just ignore the ignoramus' and all will be good, but isn't that the same everyone, like say especially POS Texas??? I mean come on, no public lands to drive on??? Cali and Colo have plenty.... Need I say more???
 
Chain control here let's 4x4 with snow tires by, which is nice. Snow/slush is no joke tho, but usually it's the Subarus sprawled out in the middle of the road, where you need to swerve to avoid.. which causes its own problems.

Honestly safer with chains, I have a pair that fits 33inch tires just in case. I've seen plenty 4x4 with great tires slide into trees or cliffs because they felt too confident went 40+ mph.
