Was browsing and came across this- apparently in some Asian countries, including India (where I am originally from), the 4R is released as the Toyota Fortuner.

Hate to rain on everyone's parade but the Fortuner is not a rebadged 4Runner.

It is just another derivative of the Hilux chassis. The Fortuner has a shorter wheelbase than the 4R, weighs less, is narrower, is shorter in length, etc etc.

To add further. It is a global vehicle, ie sold almost unmodified in many countries vs the 4Runner sold only in a couple of countries.

As you state, the Fortuner (For-tuner) is built on the the simpler Hilux pickup frame and is simply a wagon bodied Hilux with the same mechanicals.

The 4Runner is a different body on the LandCruiser Prado platform. The LandCruiser Prado slots in 1 model below the LandCruiser 200 and is sold almost everywhere else in the world.

For example, the SUV line up in South Africa is:
RAV4, Fortuner, LandCruiser 70series, LandCruiser Prado, LandCruiser 200

The Fortuner is thus a very rugged vehicle (Hilux pickups have been the most famed pickup in Africa and Europe for toughness and reliability for decades), despite the perception given buy its styling that it is soft and akin to the early Lexus RX300.

The Fortuner is sold in SA with the 4.0 V6 petrol, same as the one used in the US, or a 3.0 D4D 4cylinder turbo diesel which is by far the higher volume model, and puts out around 120kw (160HP) at 3400rpm and 343 nm (253lbft) or torque from 1,400-3,200rpm.

The 2.7vvti is not a diesel engine (as someone stated above). It is a 4cylinder petrol.

My uncle has a pearl white one in the Philippines. I would say that it's about similar in size to the Lexus RX300's but with more off road capabilites. Interior is average at most. The leather seats werent as soft as the ones on my 5th gen. It's pretty quick and torquey too.
