thinking of buying a TE...help!

Hi guys,

I recently sold my silverado and I am looking hard at the new 4runner. My wife drives an 04 v-6 4runner which I think we will keep forever but I am really interested in the 5th gen.

KDSS is an option I want.
How much should the KDSS add in price? I am going to the dealer this weekend and I don't want to get ripped.

Any other options I should strongly consider?

I will report back after my visit to the dealer.

Why not go on toyota.com and "build" your vehicle for your zip code, so you have a baseline price on what to expect and know what option(s) are available in your area. Depending on the region, you may or may not be able to order certain options...

For example, in the NY tri-state area, a TE w/ kdss is a somewhat hot commodity. Meanwhile in states like CO you apparently have them sitting on the lot 5-10 at a time.

Don't get too caught up on how much each option is costing you, you're going to turn it into a numbers game, a game which dealers are experts at playing :) Just worry about total price and get what you are comfortable with paying.

the toyota dealer here has three trail models and has no clue what kdss is....wtf. Rule number one=know the product you are selling. They loose a sale and I can't buy what I want.

thanks for the help, I went on their website and kdss doesn't appear to be an option. ...

Toyota US sales are divided into autonomous Regions, and each Region has their own builds. Toyota.com will only allow you to select options available in your Region.

Use a SC zip code. Unless you have a VERY cooperative dealer, you may have to travel - many members have done so.

thanks, I don't mind traveling at all. I will actually be riding across the country from san francisco to georgia in a month, I could stop at lot of places along my route...I just want to drive one with KDSS to make sure I can really tell the difference.
 
Where at in GA are you? I dealt with a few dealers (can't remember names) but they didn't have a clue as to what the KDSS was as well. Nalley Toyota of Roswell was great, and ordered mine for me. Got it in just 3-4 months. Well worth the wait for the KDSS though. Toyota Mall of Georgia kinda pissed me off buy selling one that I had left to go get money to put a hold deposit on. I hadn't been gone 15 minutes. So I chose not to use them any more.

I have a Trail with KDSS, and my dad has an SR5, same year. You can tell a difference in handling and body roll. He is 60 years old and can tell a difference. I test drove an SR5 and then the Trail and could tell a difference.

I know there are several threads on here about KDSS. Most people have commented on how they love the KDSS, whether they own a T4R with it, or not. Everyone else that claims it doesnt make a difference are just saying so because they couldnt afford it, or are trying to make themselves feel better about not getting it in the first place.

I bought a 2010 certified limited last september and before that I drove two used TE. and have seen a few more around here ( tennesee)with low miles on them for sale
They are not really a daily driver for the city and if fitted with off road tires they are noisy on city pavement and the suspension is pretty rigid .

I think that is why I am seeing used trails around here but few SR5's or limited 5th gens .

just a watch out for you ......if you are not going off road I would buy a SR5 4X4

I couldnt disagree more. The Trail Edition has a much more stable ride than the SR5's. No stock TE comes with offroad tires, and when I test drove a Limited the bumps were harsh due to the thinner profile tires.

so those two posts totally conflict with each other...haha.

It seems like either the TE, SR5 or the Limited would all be noisy if you put mud terrains on them.......

Are the seats more firm in the TE? Are they less comfy than the SR5?
 
is there a way to tell by looking at the tags on the inside of the door to tell whether or not the trail edition has KDSS?

I daily drive my TE in the city to and from work in stop and go rush hour traffic. I also have AT tires and while they're a little louder than other tires you either get used to them or don't. I hardly even notice the noise over the radio.

I sort of agree with you. Not much point in paying extra for a locker if you aren't taking it off road, but lots of people feel it's worth it for the KDSS. I didn't think I'd take mine off road much when I first bought it but after doing a few trails I got addicted to it.
