thinking of cutting off the back...

Well I tried to do a little searching on the internet, but didn't come up with what I was looking for, but I know I have seen a 4runner (I'm thinking it was a 2nd Gen and also a 4th gen) that had cut off the back to make a small truck bed. And when I lived in Denver, Im pretty sure I saw a 3rd gen with this done, and it looked awesome! But what I really want to know, and see is a write up about it. I am thinking of doing it, not by me, but having it done professionally at a body shop that can do custom work like this, probably a hot rod place.

Anyways, anyone know of any write ups with pictures, and an approximate cost to do this? (professionally, I'm not taking my grinder to my vehicle)

Interesting project! For some reason a few Trooper guys did a conversion like this. Don't know why it was popular with that crowd.

That is a pretty sick looking 3rd gen! I was thinking of trying to do something a little more professionally, like the white 4th Gen. Id like to be able to use the rear hatch, and modify it to be used as a sliding rear window before the small truck bed if that makes sense. Basically I want to make a truck out of a 4runner, but with the rear sliding window we have and a small truck bed.

Oh, I think I missed that, I went through all 9 pages of his build. I saw he made the tailgate, but I don't think he ever closed off the back.

Please do this! I've wanted to do this forever but don't have the time and probably not the $$. You should cut the back end off and bob the back part too! I think I've only seen 2 4runners with this mod. Mossy and I think the others name is like osu-runner or something. I usually just look at 80 series pics to get ideas.

haha, well its definitely something I am considering. And yeah, I have seen a few 80 series that have done this mod, but like you said not many 4runners, or at least many 3rd gens. I'm not sure I have the money, I should probably stop by a hot rod shop and get a quote to start with. But if I do it, there will be a write up with pics!

Sounds like you should save up some cash and get a DC Taco.

Yep, that white one is exactly what I am thinking. That thing looks awesome! I am going to save those pics so I can show the body shop what I want to do.

I would have to guess a body shop would probably want like $5K+ to do a job like this professionally (not counting the exocage). Any one else have a guess?

there was a write up on a 3rd gen in peterson's 4wheel offroad just a couple months back where he had done this exact conversion, I will try find it tonight so I can get you the month issue, maybe you could find the owner and talk to him about it.

This is by far the most extreme mod that you could do to your runner, DO IT!!

And take lots of pics for us to drool over! As I will be living vicariously through you due to my dog and wife thinking I lost my mind cutting up my 4r.

Yeah if I had something else as a daily driver this would be on my list of mods to do. But for now I need the enclosed rear end... Say goodbye to the cargo space I guess unless you find somewhere else to put the spare.

Drinknmolson-Your talking about Mossy's truck. Its the same one that steeze posted earlier. He was in peterson's a couple months ago. Its a sick 4runner im pretty sure he just s/c'd it.
