Many reasons...
1. Money
2. I can see how I like the larger tires before I spend money on a lift. By doing it a piece at a time it will allow me to evaluate each mod individually.
3. It looks awesome.
4. It NEEDED tires now. 38k on the stock dunlops and they had seen their better days. Why buy 265s now then turn around in a few weeks/months and buy bigger tires after a lift.
I plan on a lift within the next couple of weeks.

But you would have to modify more of the truck for the tires to fit now vs. lifting it first.

Not from what I've read. Several people running these tires on TE's with only fender mod.
I researched this TO DEATH before deciding on the order of things. If I buy bigger tires now and decide that I hate the look/ride within the first couple of weeks then I doubt I will be lifting it. At least at that point I will have the option of trading the tires in on a less aggressive/smaller option and calling it a day.

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. I'm new to the 4runner thing(not to modding vehicles) and I'll be the first to admit I don't know jack about T4Rs. I never said anyone doesn't know what they are talking about. I've read threads by guys like ducmonsta for almost a month making my decision, and I'm thankful for their knowledge.
This is the beginning of a build thread, not the end. If you don't have anything useful to add, just ignore it!
I have BFG 285's with no lift. Moved the fender liner forward and cut off part of the front bumper up front. Can barely tell I did anything. It's fine. Only time I really hear rubbing is if I turn quickly while slowing down, but that's primarily because the front shocks I think are soft. Probably going to get Bilstein 5100 kit to level her out and be fine with that.

I can see that you've done your research. I'm merely stating that you will have to modify the truck differently for 285s in stock form than in lifted form. I know it's just a fender liner mod and mudflap removal (if you have them). And as long as you intentionally stay on the road you won't have any issues. But I can almost guarantee that the tires WILL rub if you attempt to go over a curb at full lock with more speed than 4lo.

Anyway, initial driving impressions are VERY positive. Drove about 20 miles in the city and quick one exit trip on the highway. First impressions:
1. Much less road noise then I expected.
2. Feels more stable and tracks better than worn out stock dunlops
3. Does not feel sluggish at all. Noticeable, but doesn't bother me a bit. This thing wasn't winning any drag races in the first place.
4. Some rubbing in reverse at full lock, but I haven't moved the fender liner yet
Maybe I feared the worst, but I must say I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

Also, if you decide that you don't like the way the tires look at stock height(what you had mentioned), just know it has a completely different stance when lifted.

I'm not sure what your statement has to do with anything. I can tell by his post count that he is a frequent contributor to this forum, and I'm sure a wealth of information.
What I can't figure out for the life of me is why you are trying to make him the main topic of my build thread, or fabricate some sort of conflict. What have I said that was wrong?
