For all those who know, sometimes you dont want or need this activated (Sand,Mud, Ect...) Here's how you disconnect it. Keep in mind that you warning lights will stay on.(also Disables ABS so be Safe)

Yes, that's been posted before. Another option would be putting a switch inline with the power (or ground) wire in that connector and running it to the cabin.

I thought about doing it as a mod, but I've never really been in a position where I wished I could turn it off completely. I tend to just lock the differential and then I'm able to power out of almost anything.

But maybe I'll do it in the future....

Yeah i would much rather have that also but haven't had the time to figure out all the little details. Sorry about the repost but i just haven't seen it as easily detailed. just thought other might find it informative.

IIRC, there is also a pin on the OBDII connector that you can ground at or after startup, which will turn stability and traction control off until you restart. The process is meant as a service procedure to use when you're going to put the 4Runner on a dyno for an engine or brake check. It's discussed in the service manual.

You could buy an OBDII connector plug and rig up a switch, I guess. It would be easier than running something through the firewall.

Disconnecting ABS and INSURANCE COMPANIES

Folks, I would venture that if you disable ABS and have a subsequent accident, you will have no insurance

just my opinion - and a guess

VSC

Another solution is:

If you own a 4WD, just lock the center diff, that turns VSC off but lets keep on the ABS. I would venture if you are where VSC is causing problems, sand and or gravel, then you would be using 4WD? ( I realize some don't have 4WD) and if so VSC can really cause trouble and get you stuck.

I have been in 2 situations where I had to turn off VSC by locking the center diff. Both times by turning it off, I was able to get out of where I was having trouble, gravel and very wet slushy snow.

I totally agree that if you get in situations where it's engaging and slowing the truck's power down it can be most disconcerting. The first time I had it happen, it took me 3 or so minutes to remember that VSC cuts your power when you start to spin. The 08 model off switch is a nice idea.

i highly doubt most insurance adjusters would even think to check that.

My only reply is

If there were an accident and If some one were killed and the cops did a crash scene investigation and figured out the anti lock brakes failed....I would bet they would figure it out. Especially if someone installs a switch to turn ABS on/off - as is suggested in this thread earlier.

I am sorry, but I think your dead wrong. and I think disconecting ABS is a very silly thing to do

ABS is very effective on road, which is why its in (i think) all new cars

not trying to be offensive, i just disagree

I dont know what to think about the whole ABS debate starting here, but there are alot of cars still on the road with out ABS so until its mandatory to drive with it, i dont know what insurance companies could say about it. BUt my whole reason of showing this was to in form those who get into a situation where they need power and wheel spin.

Example- I was doing some trail riding and had to cross a small river, with slick river rocks, soft bottom, and about a two foot depth, and about mid way in all the vcs and trac controls started kicking in and trust me there's nothing worse than being in the middle of a river and feeling motor lag

Question for Clayton

Clayton,

You description sounds a lot like my driving, I will come to a spot that needs care, no VSC kicking in. I will go to 4Hi, and lock the center, turns off VSC, leaves ABS, then make the crossing or go through the mud etc. , then kick center diff off and allow VSC to come back on. It can also come in handy when driving off road on gravel etc. to help keep traction.

It looks to me like all the discussion about a VSC off switch is distracting some from the fact that we already have one. It's the center differential lock button and the circumstance where it would not suffice compared to a pure VSC off switch is so unlikely as to be almost moot.

i think his point is: when you're quoted for insurance, your insurance co gets the VIN which will show the truck COMES with ABS and if you were to disable it and it's found out, they may not honor your policy.

i think there's a difference between a car coming with it as standard equipment to be turned off by the owner to a car that wasn't because the technology wasn't there 15+ years ago or whatever.

that said i think his point is valid, but who's to say unless they've experienced the situation first hand.

My problem with the whole system is that even when i lock the diff in 4hi, when i get in a mud hole and need the tires to spin, the TRAC Control still kicks in and boggs the engine down and wont lt the tires spin. Has anyone else noticed this or been in that situation?.....I thought that others have had this problem thats why i posted how to get rid of it. its amazing how much better my 4runner does off road wiithout it!

(BTW -i believe the limited has a TRAC off switch, it would be nice if it was available on the SR5)

I'm inexperienced in mud (and try to stay that way) but found myself in some recently. It was going up a mountain road and I really wanted to get to my destination instead of turning back. After carefully determing that the road seemed to be a consistent layer of 3 or 4 inches of slick mud with a firm base I continued on, center locked, trying to gain and keep momentum whenever possible. A couple of times, the power necessary to go uphill brought me to a stop as the wheels broke free and spun until I was not moving. I didn't notice much traction braking when moving, but ATRAC allowed me to get moving easily (I was surprised) from a standing, uphill start and crawl slowly up the hill. Sounds like you have more experience in mud than I do, but I can't imagine traction braking with the center locked being too intrusive, at least while in motion, anyway.

The whole point of being able to disable VSC and ATRAC/TRAC for some people is the fact that you have the option to do so.

Having NO traction/stability aids makes the sport of driving more challenging in many instances, which is why many of us enjoy off-roading. Not to mention high speed desert applications.. since ATRAC/TRAC acts as a pseudo locker by applying light brake force when traction loss is sensed, I can't help but wonder if that would impede upon high speed fun?

Although locking the center torsen diff disables VSC, there may be instances where you don't want power distributed 50/50 to the front and rear axles (perhaps more high speed applications?) Having a VSC off-switch provides the flexibility to make this possible.

Of course, on-road bad weather driving warrants the use of such blessings as traction aids and stability control, but there are times, especially in a vehicle that is designed to be versatile and appeal to the true enthusiast, when such aids are not wanted and might even interfere negatively.

I would assume that its not too hard to wire VSC/ATRAC disable switches as a mod. In the end it boils down to a matter of having options and flexibility. If I had a 4th gen, I would definately wire a TRAC/ATRAC off switch and a VSC off switch.

FYI: I've heard that the FJ Cruiser has a switch to disable TRAC/ATRAC like the 08 4runners have to disable VSC.

Clayton has a good point

Clayton has a good point.

In real mud, I would agree, you need to be able to spin the tires to get the mud to fling out and clear the treads. For any real distance in bad mud this would be important. If the TRAC system is still going to kick in and slow you down, this could be trouble for sure. Pa

I can't speak for the roads everywhere, but here in Arkansas, even good quality forest service roads can go to crap. The worst thing is a big snow (which we just had) which then melts slowly on the roads, it just turns them to mush. Or a big rainy spell can do much the same, however rain will most times run off and let you get down the good base.

So it's something to keep in the back of your head.

FJ and Trac / A-TRAC

I also noticed that the 2008 FJ offers,
VSC
TRAC
Both standard

A-TRAC is optional and only seems to come with the locking rear diff.

It's my understanding that the 4R 4WD V6 has A-TRAC standard and as this post points out, you can't turn it off. The 2008 4R has a VSC off switch.

I understand what VSC is, but not the difference between

TRAC and A-TRAC on the FJ.

On the 4R, I always thought that:
VSC will power down the engine when it notices spinning or something that it feels is dangerous due to the road considitons.
ATRAC, will use the ABS system to brake the tire that is spinning so you can get more traction from the wheel with traction. Net like a qusi diff lock But it doesn't slow down the engine RPMs.

But it's a very confusing subject.

it works

So there has been a lot written about VSC and ATRAC here and in other posts.

And I am a guilty party for starting several. - I dont think Toyota does a good job of explaining how good ATRAC is. but anyway.

I followed our colleagues directions above in post 1 and disconnected my VSC/Anti lock brakes over the weekend to play.

Wow, a V6 T4R will smoke both back wheels with a little motivation, well a little brake and a lot of gas.

unreal and way cool

j

so guys, does unplugging this switch really worked successfully?!

as i have tried taking off the ABS fuse last weekend but the result was NO brakes at all.
