Time to replace speakers - suggestions?

i've bought mine thru amazon because i have Prime. Really saved me there. i did research elsewhere then bought on amazon.

That aside I completely agree with you on everything you have stated. The jbl headunit, amp and the way they control the system is a pain compared to nearly any other system on the market, factory or otherwise.

in the USA there are no xr-1800ps, just xr-1800p and no kfc-x783c

how ever if [MENTION=44866]ARK_SWAMP_RIDER[/MENTION] wanted the usa equivilent with full 2 year warranty it could be had for around $300ish

ive returned broken items to amazon no issues and full refund :shrug:

correct, you returned it to AMAZON. not warrantied thru manufacture. i'm just sharing info and i can get real deep into why amazon is bad, but thats another day

btw- my expert eyes say its a 3.5" speaker

I spent the first weekend after I got my 4runner replacing the JBL system because of the Limited connectivity. Fortunately I already had an HU from another vehicle to start with.

I replaced the JBL amp and speakers with MB Quart 6.5" components (front and rear) and a JL 320.4 amp. I think I spent under $300 altogether through eBay and Amazon. Not the most reliable sellers but they've been trouble-free for 4 years and still sound tremendous. I left the center speaker out; have thought about putting one in since my HU does 5.1 but never did since most music is made for stereo.

I tried going back the JBL HU with low level inputs on the amps for a brief period but the sound quality was so diminished that I couldn't handle it after getting accustomed to the aftermarket unit with RCAs. I've changed head units 2-3x since then but the speakers and amps have remained and continue to sound crystal clear. Not the loudest system on the block but it is crisp.

I've also had good luck with JL and Infinity component speakers in the past.

Haha! Unlike the suspension, I'm fine with the factory system. Maybe it's because I haven't heard anything better for comparison. My thought is if the Infinity/JBL speakers are even marginally better than stock, that should be good enough. My main concern is once I start, where do I stop? Is it just new front door speakers (the only part I actually "need"), new head unit, new amp, etc.

It really depends on what your looking for regarding sound wise.

rainbow, focal, morel, hertz, inifiniti kappa, dynaudio, and my personal fave:eyebrows: diamond audio.

most of these are higher end, but some are very affordable.

I would highly suggest upgrading that head unit and amp.:tongue1:

After thinking it over for a few days, I'm going to go with just replacing the stock speakers with the Infinity Reference speakers. Planning on 6x9 fronts and 6.5 rears. I'd love to do a full swap, but I've got other priories at the moment and just need the blown speakers replaced.

That said, I'm looking for suggestions on tweeters. I would like to replace the tweeters in the front doors and also the center dash speaker. I looked into the 3.5s, but I can't find a matching speaker in this size. Infinity offers a 3 ohm 3.5", but no longer has the 2 ohm version. I did find some 1" 2 ohm tweeters. Which would be the better option?

if you get the component 6x9 set , you will get the tweeters with it and they come seperate so you can mount them in the t4r factory location.

I would suggest whichever brand you choose to get silk tweeters . THey sound better than the aluminum.

I did the front and rear speakers. Put in JVC CSV series 6x9" (used Metra 82-8146 6" x 9" Speaker Adapter) in the front and 6.5" in the rear. In the rear I cut the speaker out of the frame and used it as the adapter. Also used these wire adapters x4 (Metra 72-8104) to make connections easier. Cost me $108 through Amazon shipped and took me a few hours. They sound great to me but I'm note an audiophile. To many rock concert when I was younger. Probably couldn't tell the difference if I did go high end. :ear:

Sticking with a 2 ohm setup seems to keep me pretty limited in options.

I wasn't really looking at component sets, the speakers mentioned (Infinity/JBL) would just be 2/3 way speaker and I was planning on separate tweeters. I haven't found any other 2 ohm options (no 2 ohm component sets).

I just looked at the Kappas. These didn't show up initially because I was looking for either 6.5's or 6x9's. I only see Kappas in 6 3/4. Will the 6 3/4's fit in the front doors? I've seen adapters for 6.5's, but not 6 3/4's.

This brings up another point. I am planning on upgrading the front and rear doors, but only the fronts are actually blown. Would I be better off to spend more money on the front, and leave stock speakers in the rear? If I did this, I could probably go with the Kappa's (assuming the 6 3/4's fit).

If you go with a speaker that has a higher ohm rating it's actually less taxing on the amp...but it also means the speakers won't be drawing as much power. If the speakers are efficient enough..you'll never notice the difference. But be careful of mix have a 2ohm woofer and a 4ohm tweeter (or visa-versa).

If you haven't bought anything yet I'll make a smoking deal on a full set of stock speakers out of my garaged low mileage 06. They are the JBL synthesis models. I just did a full blown system swap. If the dash speaker isn't hard to remove I'll pull it also for you.

if you get a 2ohm set up, and you do replace the HU and amp, you can replace the amp with 2 channel 4ohm amp and run the speakers in series to a 4ohm load on the amp.

The 6 3/4 kappas should fit, maybe with minor work, check the depth to be sure, you dont want your window not to be able to go down all the way.

as far as keeping the rears and just upgrading the fronts, you can if you keep the same ohm speakers.

This would be ideal, but it runs into much more money than I'd like to spend on audio at the moment. Between my 4runner, truck, and other hobbies, I've got a lot going on and a full audio upgrade isn't of the highest priority. However, with the stock front speakers blown, I do have to do something pretty soon.

I'm pretty certain I've figured out what I want to do. Most everything I've read says to spend extra on the front and not to be as concerned with the rear. My thinking is that if I buy the 6.5" Infinity Reference setup, I can run that in the front for the time being. When I have the funds available for better quality speakers (and possibly an amp/head unit), I can move the references to the rear doors. From the comments here, I think I would be fully satisfied with just those speakers in the front, but if not, I could still use them for the rear so it wouldn't be money wasted. Anyone see any issues with this?

Also, I'd opt for the full component set instead of piecing it together without the cross overs.
