Time to replace speakers - suggestions?

So I finally decided on the Infinity References. I went with the 6.5's front and rear, along with 1" tweeters for the front doors. Everything went in without any issues. For what I was wanting, they were a great choice (granted I don't have experience with higher end setups). If I had anything negative to say, it would be they have very little bass. I expected more, but since I have the JL sub it fills in nicely. Thanks to those of you who provided feedback/opinions/suggestions.

I would say they sound marginally better than before. Lack of bass is from the oem head unit. As you turn it up it will reduce the lower range frequencies to prevent you from blowing them. Reasoning behind this is to reduce warranty claims. Most manufacturers did this and still do. That's why jl audio invented the clean sweep, Rockford came out with the 360, mtx had their version, audio control and a bunch more that I cant remember right now.

I know why your truck sounds the way it does from experience. Hey as long as you are satisfied, it's all that matters.

Point taken, and I appreciate the advice. For now, a new head unit just isn't in the budget. The important thing was getting rid of the blown stock speakers, and this setup does the job and does it pretty well.

When funds allow, I will swap out the head unit and upgrade to a component setup in the front. This is the reason I went 6.5's for the front, that way I already have the adapters and 6.5's seem to be easier to sell (I'll probably keep the Infinity 6.5's in the rear, and move the Infinity tweeters to the rear cargo area).

Yes, mostly because there aren't many 6x9 component sets available. There are tons of 6.5" components, so seemed like it would be a better option. When the time comes for me to switch out, I already have everything needed.

I would bet that your factory tweeters were fine. I would have bought 6x9 3 way or 5 way speakers and take out the oem cross over out. Then wired up the oem tweeter in parallel with the 6x9. It would have sounded awesome. But then again what do I know lol

Elaborate more on this? One of my buddies blew one of my speakers turning the radio all the way up

Elaborate how? I think I was pretty straight to the point. Do you need what colors and what it all looks like? Then click on link in my signature and there are links in first post to my list of mods and diy including gutting the oem radio/speakers.

Reading through this thread, I was wondering about that the whole time.
I was under the impression that the front 6x9's were woofers only w/ a crossover between them and the tweeters, so installing coax or triax 6x9's in the front with everything still hooked up the same would be rather wasteful since the crossover would be eliminating all that nice high end.
I've only had my T4R for a week and am just coming up to speed on everything, so I could be mistaken, but if the 6x9's are limited by a crossover network as I think I read, then I don't understand why one would get coax or triaxes for that position unless the crossover network was going to be gutted in the process.
School me if I'm mistaken!

Wire up a 6x9 before the cross over and you good. Leave the oem tweeters in line. Truck will sound great.

2003 4Runner Dash Speaker Replacement

My 2003 SR5 4Runner front dash speaker was in tatters and produced - at best - scratchy sounds. So I removed the speaker, cut off the speaker basket, dropped in a new 2" speaker into the hole of old speaker frame and then reinstalled the whole thing back into the original mounting in the dash.

Very nice, that's a lot easier than cutting the dash up to fit a 3.5" coax speaker like I did

Can you clarify where the x-over is on the JBL system and maybe recommend a good 6x9 for front door speaker replacement? I assume replacing the rear door speakers are more straightforward because there is no factory x-over running to them?

The xover is built in the bracket in the oem 6x9.. Just snip the wire after the xover in the bracket and splice new wires into the 6x9.

There is also a resistor before the oem tweeter in the bracket.

Surprisingly the oem tweeter is pretty good/clear. Its the oem speakers that are junk.. 22wats.. :/

Im in the process replacing them with 6.5'' components. Wiring a new amp and skip the JBL entirely. Unfortunately I have to do bits at a time due to baby time restraints. Takes longer to run wires and rca throughout the truck.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like I might be good to go simply replacing the 6x9 speaker itself and leaving the oem tweeter alone.

If you do you cant get real quality speakers. its 22 watts.. So you are limited to cheapies.. Dont go over 25-30 watts.. If you are happy with oem sound then yes.. no need to replace the whole system.. Im not an audiophile, but I spend almost a couple hours a day in traffic. And trips to the sierras.. Its nice to have decent sound.

Just be careful with the door panel removal.. I broke my door lock cable clip. Looks like I can either glue or replace the whole cable at this point.. see a few threads down, I posted asking.

If you get say 80w speakers the amp is not strong enough to power the speakers. It will sound distorted and not rich. SO you will do it no justice and is a waste of money. Also potential to ruin the speaker when underpowered.

Funny you mention the cost because I was pretty set on spending money on an overhaul too, but recently added an iSimple unit that allows me to play music from a USB drive, so I'm happy with that for now. Rear doors take 6.5" the amazon link has them too, on drop down menu.
