Timing Belt. Noisy Tensioner?

I have a pretty good squeak lately upon start up. I've pretty much decided it's the timing belt tensioner bearings (if there are any, is it hydraulic?). The sound is loudest right above the timing cover. It's only noisy for a few minutes, then completely subsides. Sounds very similar to a squeaky belt. Maybe it's the belt itself? 170k and I have no clue when the TB was last changed, if ever. I've only owned this Runner for about 8 months and have put about 3k miles on it. It's mostly a beach and woods truck.

Have any of you guys had this issue?

How long do you think it will hold out before it grenades inside the housing?

That is a tough question. The jackass answer is that it will last right up until it breaks.

You can take a cover off and look at the belt, but in reality you can't really tell much. You may be able to see some info on the belt if you look real close. Obviously if it isn't a Toyota belt, it has been replaced, but that is about the most info you can get. For the cost of the belt and your mileage, you wouldn't be trowing away money by replacing it. There is another thread with links to ebay complete kits. I would order one of those and keep my fingers crossed.

Good call on ordering that kit. I saw that thread. It would be nice to have around if something lets go.
