Timing issues. Can you "point" me in the right direction.

I need help fellas. Before taking my 86 22re apart to do the timing chain I set the motor to tdc, marked the distributor and took many pics. Now I've got her all back together and put the dist. right back where it was and the truck wouldn't start, it just spit and sputtered. I moved the dist. back and forth and it changed the sputtering but still wouldn't run. I even went as far as advancing and retarding it a tooth on the dist. and I got it to a point where it ran (rough) and soon as I hit the gas it conked out. I'm assuming maybe since there was so much slack in the chain the timing was set for that and now its nowhere near right for a tight chain. My question is this. If I set the balancer on 0*TDC where is a good starting point to set the dist. I marked the middle of the #1 post on the housing and set the center of the rotor button to that line and it will not run. Does this make sense to you guys? I checked my timing gears numerous times after rotating and the silver links always came back to the dots.

Admin could you move this to a complete dumba$$ forum!! Total brainfart. 22re doesn't run too well with the intake tube in the cargo area. MAF not really getting much of a reading. Anyways if anyone searches this thread and needs to know where to set the dist. I was told to set the timing mark at 0* and set the dist. into the head with the rotor at 12 o'clock letting it rotate back to 11 o'clock as it goes in. Worked great for me.
