Tint, inside or outside of the glass

am getting tint today and last week when i ask the guy where they put the tint and he said, outside. and i saw one they're working on and it's on the outside of the glass windows.

does it matter where they apply the tint? any pros and cons if installed outside glass window?

any ideas? can i just ask the installer to install it on the inside window?

I've never heard of an outside tint over here in the east, but, I suppose it really does not matter other than protection. In other words, it's much less likely to get scratched or cut by road debris when installed on the inside.

I've never seen or heard of it on the outside.

They trim the tint on the outside, but when they stick it on it goes on the inside.

If by chance they are using some new stuff that goes on the outside, I'd run, not walk, to another shop. There's no way it could be durable enough to last a long time on the outside. First branch or car wash and it would be scratched to hell.

it was quite a surprise to find out that the tint goes to the outside of the windows, first time to see it. i knew when my other car, they did it on the inside.

am going today for the tint i guess ill ask to put the tint on the inside unless he has a very good reason why has to be on the outside, if not, im not having the tint, ill go find somewhere else.

he gave me a lifetime warranty though, so it must be some good stuff. the tint guy is in the business for 10 yrs.

I used to install tint for a living and it does not go on the outside. He was either pulling you leg or doesn'y know what he is talking about. If he tells you that it goes on the outside and he is serious. Find another place to get it installed. The tint is like a thin plastic sheet and it will be destroyed. Also and this is for everyone don't use an ammonia on your tint. Thats what makes it get the blueish purple color over time. Hope this got to you in time and good luck.

He shouldn't do that either. You want to do it in a low dust and dirty area. Also the any wind could wrinkle it and that not good.

That show on Speed, Unique Whips, or something like that. They install the tint on the outside. These are super $$$ cars they're installing tint on too.

But in the past, all my cars that were tinted were tinted on the inside.

don't want to change the topic but tint related question:

Tints on my car has "3M" that are legible. And they are one shade darker than the tint itself (you can see them very easily). Never seen the brand of the tint readable like that. Is this normal maybe? (I have an 05 Sport).

I've never heard of this either. Unless you like having a 3M watermark across your window for some reason, I'd go back and have the installer redo it with normal film.

Yes-they are watermarks (much better way to put it). I didn't get them installed. They came with the car from the Toyota dealer. It is CPO. I am very pessimistic that the dealer would do anything about it though.

Well then, you can either live with it, I'm guessing it's probably not horrible, just noticeable to you, or you can have any reputable tint installer remove it and replace it with a nice high quality tint film if you prefer to 'not' have 3M on your windows. Or you can even make a project out of it and do it yourself although I've been told that changing out existing tint film is kind of messy due to the adhesive on the tint you already have on top of the normal challenges that go with installing tint. I saw something today on the internet that gives detailed instructions how to go about replacing existing window tint. Maybe do a web-surf and try it yourself? The only thing that could happen is that it works and you like it or you don't like it and you can still have a professional do it for you afterwards.

ok, woah, tint on outside, what? i haven't heard of a film that allows you to do that while it staying durable. in regards to the show that applies tint to the outside, i'd have to see it to believe it. i've always applied tint to the inside. we cut our patterns on the outside, but the film won't last on the outside. not even ceramic film, which on average is very expensive for the customer.

i hope he was joking with you.. that or if not, get the name brand of the film he's installing..? i'd like to know what company claims that you could install film on the outside of the glass. the manufacturer's can be picky when fulfilling warranties..

oh, and i'd agree.. if they do really install it on the outside, go somewhere else..

I've never heard of outside tint. From a quick browse at tintdude.com there are exterior tints, I found exterior applications for buildings only.

Like ALPHA said, they measure and cut the tint to size by making it adhere (with water) on the OUTSIDE of the window with the clear side of the tint towards the glass. Once the tint is cut to shape and the installer is happy, he then will peel the clear backing of the tint and will install it on the INSIDE.

will the fronts and back match?

i've been wanting to tint my front windows but i want it to match the shade of dark on the back windows. is there a color code or something i can find to make sure what i get matches? i don't really want them lighter and definitly don't want them darker then the back windows. do i just trust my tint guy? kick his ass later if it doesn't match?

i did it

the tint guy and i must be on different page when we were talking about the tint. i dont know for some reason it made me think and beleive that i heard him "outside".

it turned out to be one of the best i've seen, im satisifed with the way it looks. and yes the tint is on the inside.

it looks cool, pretty much when i stare at it, it blends the tinted windows to the body paint especially the rears.

i will post pictures once i get it washed and a nice weather, no longer than 3 days or maybe sooner.
