Tire Mount / Balance Questions

I just purchased Cooper ATPs online and will soon be looking for a reputable shop to mount and balance them.

Do I need to have them Road Force Balanced or just a standard balance unless the results require road force?

What's a reasonable price for a mount/balance?

Anything I should know about the TPMS sensors prior to mount/balancing?

Do I need to have the shop put new valve stems on or just use the old ones?

Anyone have a good recommendation for a tire shop with a load force machine in the DC/MD/VA area?

Always road force it. In addition, the shop needs to have special adaptor to balance it. I suggest going to a big retail chain (e.g. Discount Tire does a great job) or Toyota dealership ($$, but done right). I would stay away from Mom & Pops tire stores. Yeah, you can buy tires from them and let them mount it...but then turn around and go straight to the places I mentioned to get it balanced.

Thanks, I contacted the local Toyota dealer and another large tire shop for quotes.

Toyota will mount/balance them with a Hunter Road Force machine for $15 a piece, no charge to reset the TPMS. Seems like a good deal.

The other tire shop wanted $29.00 a piece for balancing with the Road Force and $4 a piece for the TPMS reset.
 
The special adapter that Thai is talking about causes the wheels to be lug-centric balanced in stead of hub centric. Many shops don't have the adapter and just hub centric balance. Toyota and most after-market rims require lug-centric balancing to get it right. Hub centric balancing can leave the wheels looking balanced on the machine but not on the vehicle.

Many members of the DC/MD/VA area go to him and can confirm the shops rep.

I know as soon as I get new rubber Im going to him for install and to fix my redneck balance!!!
 
I will definitely hit up High Tech down the road for a lift, just not sure I want to drive all the way out to Chantilly for a mount/balance. Toyota says they have all the EQ and can take care of it, any issues with the dealer getting your tires balanced correctly?
 
Are you useing stock wheels (Hub Centric)? If so you should be ok...

The problems I fell into were,
The dealer in frederick didn't have a lug centric adapter for my lug centered after market wheels (despite a TSB from 10yrs ago requiring them to have one) plus their new balancer was broken so they were using an old one. Tire World tried 3 times to do a hub centric balance on road force, but just kept chasing weight. The only shop in frederick that had both the adapter and roadforce and actually balanced the wheels, mounted the weights on the outter lip of the wheels. :rockthrow:

After 3 weeks of research and thanks to Thai's posts, I now know more about mounting and balancing then I ever wanted to... I much rather drive an hour each way to High Tech, then to ever go thru what I went thru ever again!

I have stock SR5 wheels. I'm going to give it a go with Fitzgerald in Germantown and will drive out to High Tech if they leave me with some "Good Vibrations."

Still waiting on the UPS guy.. should be here today?! I've got someone that wants my old Dunflops so as soon as the ATPs get here I'm heading over to Toyota. Hopefully they won't screw up the dipped wheels too much... guessing I'm going to have to redo them.

Standby for results.

EDIT - At the dealer now getting them mounted!
