Tire recommendations...

Hi,

I've got a 2000 Limited with these Geo-Trac P265 70R/16 Radial XLTs. They look ok but I get a lot of bounce and steering feedback out of them. Not extreme but every few minutes or so I'll get slight shimmy and some feedback through the steering wheel. I plan on getting the tires rebalanced and an alignment done. This issues are similar to one I had years ago with a Bronco and All-Terrain TA radials. Nothing I could do would stop it till I finally changed all the tires to another brand and type.
Anyway, just curious what you guys would recommend for a mostly highway 4Runner with an occasional rough dirt/mud road thrown in here or there (mostly hunting season). Nothing close to serious 4 wheelin'. I really only use 4wd when on the boat ramp, winter and on those muddy hunting trips. 95 percent of the time I'm on the highway. I'd like something that would give me the traction when I need it but give me a nice ride on the highway and long lasting. Any suggestions?

Those look great for on-road driving but I wouldn't want those for anything offroad, personally. These are tried and true for YEARS to be a GREAT on and offroad tire.

You could even go with a 245/75x16 size. It is virtually the same size(just a tad narrower) and it's a more common and less expensive size.

BFG KO for 95% highway use? Doesn't make much sense to me.

The LTX would probably be fine for the 5% he's offroad.
 
those LTX MS are actually pretty good tires if you dont go off the road much... my co worker had them on his AWD escape and he got through everything he needed to go through in the national forest around here, and they do great on the highway.
 
The LTX will go to 70k.

I've heard some negative things about the KO in the rain, not sure if it's all true, but it's out there.
 
The AT2's seem very nice and should wear great, but the price is steep. I'd give Yokohama AT-S a try.

Not trying to argue, but if I even go offroad at all I would want a tire with some strength. That tire probably has pretty weak sidewalls. The KO's have 3 ply sidewalls. I guess I just like the feeling of knowing I have a strong tire on my rig while on the trails..
 
Wow, some good information. Not much of a common thread but it gives me food for thought and I've got 3 or 4 to check further on. That really helps with so many out there. Thanks for the info!
 
I'm about to be in the market for new tires too. I like my Revo's, but they look pretty beat with about 40k on them. To their defense, I do drive my truck really hard. Punctures in 2 of the 4 tires and they hold their plugs well. Although I need to replace a valve stem, it's leaking slowly and making the truck pull hard left. Good luck searching.

First, stick with P-metric tires (P26570/16 not LT265/70/16). Many tire discussions don't specify and treat the two as equivalent, but there's a big difference.

I think the Bridgestone Revo 2 would fit your needs almost perfectly.
 
I agree with sticking with the p-metric tires, especially if driven on the road a high percentage of the time. The durability issue is moot if your not doing alot of offroading that involves rocks and etc. which could be a hazard to your sidewalls, and your not doing alot of towing.
