OK, so from what I've read in the last few minutes of googling. It seems the BIGGEST benefit is the efficiency of the compressor when water cooled. I doubt we would see any real world fuel mileage increases unless you live in Phoenix and run the a/c 24/7. I'd love to see a real world test to see if the cooling can lower the in cabin temp significantly quicker with the water cooling on the condenser. All in all, this is one of the best threads I've encountered here, I am humbled in Y'allz presence.

Who said it would help mpg? I missed that. I agree that's a stretch. Maybe, if the period of continuous running on initial start-up was shorter, there is some economy, but as it only happens once per trip, it's de minimus, if it exists at all.
 
I'm in AZ and as everyone knows the summers can be brutal. I've been thinking abut ways to assist the AC in order to make it more efficient, so I'm glad you posted this.

I think an efficient dedicated fan for thr condenser would really help. Maybe you could setup a mister that sprays only when you are at idle or in park. And I'd probably say go with a finer mist so you can cover more area while using less water.

I really like the idea of insulation under the headliner. I probably need to do that.

The MPG was my own extrapolation, based on the efficiency of water cooled condensers on rooftop a/c units. That was why I figured in a constant heat like AZ, you could benefit from water cooling during more of the operation, and potentially run the compressor less and see a mpg benefit. It would be minuscule at best, but probably does exist, maybe. :hat:

The fan would certainly help. My son's BMW e36 323i has an electric auxiliary fan mounted in front of the condenser (a 'pusher') in addition to a conventional belt-driven fluid-clutched 'puller' mechanical fan like ours behind the rad. The aux. fan only engages when coolant temps exceed a certain level, but it also engages full-time whenever the A/C is running.

It wouldn't be that hard to fit one of these on our trucks, it's about the right size and there are aftermarket suppliers at a reasonable price--if you felt the need.

I am back with experimental information.

This method really works! A significant improvement. I noticed the car gets cool with in 3.5 minutes! Without the spray, it takes about 7 minutes.

I started using two nozzles from two spray bottles to spray into the condenser (Nozzles are from McGuire's branded products): This stopped the frequent refills of reservoir!

All in all... excellent! and now I am working on my 4runner. This will need about 3 nozzles.
 
Here's an idea for your water jet system. Any way you can rig a collection system to the condensate drain on your evaporator so you don't have to refill the reservoir? Just an odd thought I had.
Also, as someone else stated, those misters are the way to go. When I lived in AZ, those things where everywhere and real cooled you down if you were near one, and didn't seem to use a lot of water and spread it around a lot more evenly.

I don't think you want to atomize the water too much. The desired effect comes from the phase change that occurs when the water in contact with the condenser tubes and fins evaporates thus absorbing heat from the condenser. If you mist it, the water evaporates in the air (this is why it seems effective in the use where the objective is to cool the air) and will have less of an effect on the condenser and thus the air in the cabin. Also, to the degree the car is moving, much of the cooled air will just be lost doing no good whatsoever. I strongly disagree. Stick to nozzles and get the water to the condenser as liquid water.

I am in Az, totally satisfied with both my gunners AC. Having an engine driven fan is a blessing compared to electric fans that can struggle at idle.

Some comments:
- Good quality window tint with high heat rejection all around DRASTICALLY changes the interior feel / temperature

- Most people have no clue that you SHOULD be washing your condenser / radiator every so often. I use a pressure washer carefully and have never damaged fins. I have had cars in which I washed the condenser / radiator for the first time and it looked like pure mud. Surprising what a difference it can make. Get some non acidic coil cleaner and liberally hose down the condenser and rad... led it sit for a bit then spray it out.

- I have run water injection on many projects as well as intercooler spraybars... it gets old re-filling the containers with distilled water. What you are doing may seem awesome.. but it will get old. Then you will get lazy and start using tap water. Next equals a failed, poor performing cooling system or you will simply just stop using the setup

- If you really want to help cool things quickly... add a pair of electric fans to the condenser in a push config. The stock fan / clutch when working perfectly draws a LOT of air. But adding two pusher fans at idle would take things to the next level. For cars with stock electric fans, I have often added one or more pushers to help with temps at idle / in traffic. Works magic
 
I'll have to check my condenser fins... It is NOT that hot here, but my AC leaves a lot to be desired even after being charged by the dealership.
 
Why not just get a remote start system. That way you can step in to an already cold vehicle. Just seems so simple and less hokey I'm surprised it wasn't brought up already.

I do that here, we've had some unbelievably humid days here the last week and a half. Problem is when I think about starting, I'm ready to go, so at best I gain a minute, which helps alot but not to the point the vehicle is cooled inside.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested using the recirculate mode rather than the fresh air mode. Cooling already cooled air will lower the inside temperature more rapidly.
 
I have no doubt spraying water helps... my question is simply, wont spraying water at the front of your truck all the time be hard parts? I know the hard water we have in Vegas reaks havoc on everything it runs through.
 
dont think the constant humidity and possible drips after you park is worth it for the AC cooling, well adjusted AC system works very well by itself
