To wait or not to wait?

As the title suggests my wife and I are trying to decide between buying a 2017 TRD offroad premium or waiting for the inevitable 2018 redesign slated for later this year. Should we wait or buy now? What do you think?

FYI : 2018 is a carryover with no changes. 2019 refresh at the earliest, with plausible rumors pushing it to 2020.
 
If you do not need a vehicle now, then just wait. We have no idea what the redesign will be, but it could be awesome. If you end up liking the 6th gen, then get one. If not, pick up one of the last 5th gens which they will be trying to clear out. Seems like a win win.

That seems like pretty sound advice to me.

On the other hand, I didn't want to wait a year (or more - no one really knows) to get a peak at the next gen. I also knew I wanted to do some mods. I assume it'll take the aftermarket a while to settle out on good designs if the next gen is a true re-design.

Wife and i was in the same situation. Decided to pull the trigger since we really love the 5th gen look, and would be happy with it for years to come even if 6th gen comes out end of this year. Plus it's not guaranteed you would like the look of the redesign also.

I agree with this as well. Unless you have a gun to your head (please people, do not take this literally and start complaining) to purchase I'd also wait to see what 2018 offers.
 
I was chatting with a toyota sales guy the other day about the rumors that the 4Runner was going to be discontinued at the end of 2016 (i.e., there would not be a 2017 model). He confirmed that this rumor had some truth to it. Apparently, all vehicle manufacturers have to adhere to some sort of carbon footprint rules. Toyota had too many gas guzzlers and the Prius could not offset the lop-sided footprint problem. Toyota had decided to discontinue the 4Runner as a result. However, toyota then decided to shut down the Scion line and fold two of those gas sippers into the toyota line. This move fixed the footprint problem and the 4Runner lived another day. The sales guy said their are no plans to redesign or discontinue the 4Runner for the next 2 years.

So... how much of that is accurate, it's anyone's guess. But, I wouldn't hold off buying a new 4Runner because you think it will be designed. It could be discontinued entirely. I'd say, if you need a new vehicle and you like the current version, go getcha one.

Trump is also changing the emissions so the 4Runner should live for at least another 4 years..

Right, i'm not trying to get political. Sure, I'm glad the govt has our best interest in breathing good air... but... at the expense of having multiple manufacturers kill off their popular lines of vehicles *or* having them run nowhere near their power output potential?

JUST DO IT. I did last week and have no ragrets, I even got a tattoo.

Honestly, if the 6th gen/refresh is REALLY that much of an upgrade, 4runners in general hold their value so well it shouldn't cost much more to "upgrade." I bought a 5th gen because I was sick of waiting, I needed a newer vehicle, I love the 5th gen, it seems as if all the issues have been worked out, it's known to be reliable, etc.

If the 6th gen gets a new engine/trans, I would wanna wait another few years till all the inevitable issues get worked out first, so I would be back to waiting again. From personal experience and reading internet forums it seems people have better luck buying one of the last year models of a generation rather than a first year model of a generation.

What exactly is so bad about a 5th gen that you think Toyota will fix in the 6th?
 
Imho do it before the redesign.
Few reasons: any new model the first year is usually the most problematic.
If it's getting the 3rd gen Tacoma powertrain hop on over to the Tacoma site...it's a mess
Getting a 4Runner this late in its production run means most of the kinks are worked out
