To wait or not to wait?

Wait for the 2018 redesign. Then when you find out it's no change, you'll be ready to get a better deal on the 2017.
Or get a 2016 at a great price now.

How long do you plan on keeping the new 4Runner? The 4th gen models took a pretty good nosedive in value when the 5th gen models came out. Two ways to play it, a.) wait for the 6th gen and try to get a deal on a 5th, or b.) buy the 6th and pay the markup that always comes with a new model.

See, I'm happy that I jumped on a 2016 TEP so I don't have to fishing line off those TRD Off Road emblems on the B pillar. :sniper:
At any rate, if you love the way and looks and drives now then I would go pick one up for yourself. Resale is pretty darn good so if the 2020 4Runner really attracts you, then trade on up when the time comes. I plan on keeping mine in the stable for the foreseeable future. The only rig that interests me comes with a $86K price tag and I haven't been able to come to terms with that.

Go ahead and pull the trigger. Likely there won't be a redesign until 2019 and it may not be a Body on Frame SUV. Like others have said, these "gas guzzlers" are not long for this world.
Also it's usually better to have the last model year of a generation of a car that has all the kinks worked out - than a first year of a new model.
And if you buy now, you are buying a vehicle with one of the highest resale values on the market so you can buy with confidence that you can always trade it in for the new model when it comes out and you'll keep most of your investment.

I know. I am glad my trail didn't come with those b pillar emblems. If I was getting a TRDPro or an Off Road I'd ask the dealer to pull them off before I left the lot.
This is what I did. Just not a premium.
Honestly, I bought mine with no real knowledge of redesigns or anything being eminent, I decided I wanted a trail edition. Ended up with a TRD-Off Road premium '17. Now digging into stuff and looking at research, if there is a new version next year I feel that the '17 Off-Roads will be worth more than '16 Trails just for the badge and fake carbon fiber trim. Look at them historically and they never lose value like other vehicles, so pay a bit more for a '17 off-road and it should be worth significantly more than a 16 trail at pretty much the same price point when you buy new

All depends on if you need a car now. I had no choice. I was looking at 7k+ of repairs in the 18 months on a 120k mile '08 Jeep Wrangler. It was time to sell it before the repairs came up and the new Wrangler out and the value of the JK dropped.
If you don't need it now, I would wait. There will be plenty heads up of whats to come. If you don't like the gen6 just buy the gen5.
If you need something now, I would suggesting leasing a 2017 of your choice. Do a little market research and see what gets the highest resale in your area. The Off-Road Premium or SR5 Premium would be good investments at a moderate price.
I leased a 2017 TRD-Offroad Premium for 39-ish months. My autobroker got me a great price/payment with no money out of pocket. I'm using the trade in value from my JK to make the monthly payments. The end of my lease will early 2020. The gen6 may be out .. hopefully. I'm not worried about the gen5 resale sliding with the gen6 coming out. There is a very very strong resale market in general. I can sell my '17 at a profit and get the gen6 or keep my gen6 or sell and upgrade to the GX. This was the best option for me and gives me the most options in 3-ish years.
In the end its all up to you and your needs.

I am considering the same, '17 or holding for the elusive redesign. Two dealers I have spoken to have hinted at it happening. The one said 'they found a write up, and they will not be released until the beginning of '18', unlike typically at the end of the prior year for non-redesigns. Maybe to help sell off the remaining '17's?
Both dealers have the exact one I want in stock and both know it. Both know I am in no rush to make the change and can wait to '18 if I want. If anything it would be in their interest to 'lie' to me to tell me no redesign to get me to purchase one now, not lead me on to wait for a sale.
Not trying to add to the 'rumor mill', just passing along information I have received. No way to know the truth until they officially release it! So it goes...

You are talking about a major change to the electronics package to get all those feature. Add in the 'birds eye' 360 view cameras and those are all pretty major changes. My 2 cents is those won't come until Gen6 and you can bet you'll pay for it.
Personally I would love a 360 camera for off roading. Similar to what the LC or 570 have. I'm hoping that we'll see that in the Gen6, but really I'm not holding my breath.
