Yesterday I had used a little penetrating oil to remove the center nut and Philips threaded nub on each stock horn. I am now wondering if that oil inside the horn is the issue. I'm attempting to clean them out the best I can...

If I cannot get the stockers to work today, I will buy the Hella Sharptones, as someone referenced earlier. I like the lower tone as compared to the higher pitched Supertones.

Anyone have experience fixing a cargo dome light that refuses to turn-on when the rear door is opened? The light operates just fine in the "on" position, so it has something to do with the catch or where the sensor is located.

The only thing checked off my Runner list this weekend: new valve stem covers on all four tires! Three were missing at the time of purchase. Pretty shallow on the accomplishments...

Dumb question, since you had the El Grandes, and they were working, why not leave them on for now?

Mike, not a dumb question. The El Grandes would need some more adjustments with respect to mounting, at least the one on the passenger side. That one touches what looks to be an A/C hard line. Vibration against that would not be good...

And, just being me, I don't like installing stuff that doesn't work the way I expected. Also, I won't be driving it anytime soon, so no big rush. Personally, I'd like to figure-out what happened to the stock horns. Just bugs me. Heck, my little ones now want to know too... Daddy should be able to figure it out, right?

I'd ideally like to get them to work again, then maybe still order the Hellas Sharptones. For 25 bucks, and my favorite color combo, worth a try...

How deep is the little phillips screw in the back of the factory horn?

On mine, the screw is backed out by about 1/8" - I imagine those are the tone screws

Thanks for that figure Mike. Good to know. I should have noted such, but I figured that I would toss them in a box at the end of the day...

I tried different amounts of depth of those Phillips screws, yesterday. I really do think it's the penetrating oil, maybe just even a thin coat on those threads, enough to kill the ground connection!

Reviewing last week's school work with my little girls in a bit, then we'll get back on it, hitting those threads with some brake cleaner.

I do think you are correct that those Phillips screws are for tone adjustment. From what I see inside, that would make sense.

I really want that rear cargo light to work properly, so hopefully i'll make some progress there...

A bit of a mixed bag today...

First, success on the stock horns. There was a thin film of penetrating oil still on the threads that made grounding problematic. Brake cleaner and adequate time to dry did the trick. The kids and Daddy learned something!

So, decided to hold-off on a horn purchase for now. I will consider such again later when I get a bumper and do suspension goodies, possibly a new grille too.

And before I put the grille back on, I decided to paint the Toyota emblem with some extra black hammered paint.

The hood for the engine bay had been sticking, not locking, often requiring several attempts for it to finally lock. It just needed some lubricant, and secures on the first drop now. Little wins building-up...

I'll close with some futility though. That dang rear cargo light... I thought I had fixed it, so much so that I even added it to my completed list earlier in the day. There is something in this catch, or very nearby, that is not operating properly.

I first shot some brake cleaner in there and quite a bit of crud came out. While do so, the light came-on. I was on a roll! The kids who were sitting in the back were excited too. Opened and closed a few times, and it worked flawlessly. I then decided to check an hour or so later, and it wasn't working again. :ybrick:

I wonder now if I'll need to remove the back interior panel to see what's going-on. If anyone has input, please do share.

I was looking at the supertones and saw that the sharp tones sounded a little bit better after watching some YouTube reviews. Even the sharp tones sound a bit too car-like for my taste, so I kept searching and I have been eyeballing the Hella trumpet horns that plug into the stock Toyota horn wiring harness. They seem to have a bit lower of a tone than either of the disc shaped Hellas, and they’re only $20 on Amazon. I haven’t pulled the trigger on them yet, but they may be worth looking into. Best part (for me, at least) is that they’re black and blend in to the background. There’s even a 3rd gen 4runner owner in the reviews section to verify that they are a direct replacement.

Evan, I have to agree on both of those Hellas. The Supertones, to me at least, sound super irritating. I suppose that has a point on a horn though, but I want a more pleasant and appropriate sound. The Sharptones are seemingly better in that respect, but I wasn't exactly giddy about them either. Actually, they El Grandes sounded pretty good, relatively...

The Sharptones have the high frequency at 415 Hz, low at 350 Hz. The ones you link to, Hella Trumpets, are a higher frequency for both the high and low (500 and 400). So, it would seem that they would produce a higher pitch than the Sharptones...

If you get them, I'd be curious to hear your feedback. Thanks.

Just a quick note that the lower fan shroud piece that I ordered came with the two mounting clips. So, at least from Camelback, that part comes with the clips. I had ordered those too, so I have some extra clips, which is not a bad thing...

And, the lower fan shroud is installed. Apparently was not there at the time of purchase... Got something done today at least.

Oh, got color samples from Corbeau. Tan or spice...

The spice seems to be a better match, but I generally prefer darker though...

I think you should try to match the seats to the interior color of your truck as much as possible, but maybe not matching would look good; especially if all seats matched, including the rear.

In addition to the tan and spice colors from Corbeau (new front seats, Moab), I also have seat cover samples for the rear bench, from Wet Okole and CoverKing.

I will get them all out tomorrow in the sunlight, in the Runner, and make some decisions.

Just ordered those Corbeau Moab front seats in Spice. After speaking with Corbeau and others, I decided against the vinyl/cloth combo. If like others Corbeaus, including a pair that I still have, they should be quite firm and supportive.

Four 14mm bolts and a wire connector later, and I removed the driver seat.

The seat as you see it, 50 pounds, almost exactly. I will need to remove the seat belt receptacle to use with the Corbeau, so call it 49 lbs...

The weight delta, a nice side benefit, should be decent, at about 15-20 pounds per seat.

The carpet is quite clean, but I'll do some cleaning before installing the replacements, which should both be here by next week. It seems that I'll install the driver one first as the passenger bracket will need a few more days...

Ordering a rear seat cover, similar to spice in color, likely from Wet Okole. They have a slight discount that ends on Friday.

The stock seats are in great shape. The electric adjustments work just fine. I even made two short videos of them operating, as I plan to sell them. Any idea as to what these sell for?

I'll be mounting a ham radio under the driver seat. Thought about using the seat power for the radio. It's 30A, but apparently shared with the moon/sunroof. I'll likely run something from an open fuse slot...

Got the seat out when my wife was out shopping, then picked-up the kids.

I imagine someone will want these Limited seats. I have the passenger side bolts doused in penetrating oil for removal tomorrow. I won't sell them until the new seats are installed and meet my expectations...

I have so much time invested in my house. This summer is the last big project though. We've wanted to do a kitchen remodel for a few years. I told the wife when we have X saved up we could do it. By June we'll be at X. So I get to go to work as a carpenter(frame to finish) and then come home and work as, you guessed it, a carpenter. lol

The house, like the autos, a labor of love in so many ways... Sounds like we might see less of you next summer!

I totally ripped apart the kitchen in this house. Relocated the water and electrical. Just a major pain. The joker before ran hot and cold water pipes through the floor and bases of all cabinets, kitchen and all bathrooms. Wallpaper in damn near every room! I've been doing my best to refrain from house talk here. It's about 75% done. The whole far wing of the house, which includes what will be the kid's rooms and a guest room and two bathrooms. The little ones have been shacked-up with us in the master, for way too long. And that room, mirrors all over the place, speakers in the ceiling, a hot tub like 3 feet away from the bed! There's a dang hot tub on the deck, just a few step away. No regrets as the house is in a location that I wanted, and has some decent flat land for the kids. Previous home had acreage, in a remote canyon, but with little usable land... I need to get to those rooms done.

Was extremely careful to be light on the trigger. The Aero Kroil penetrating oil I find to be pretty good in not creating stains; at least compared to PB Blaster.

Not uncommon in a budget copper re-pipe. Why open the wall when you can just drill the floor and cabinets? I hope that shiz is copper, or pex.

Ya, I guess so, but so many things in this house were done in such a short-sighted fashion though...

No work on the house tonight. Helping a colleague in China... Plus, it's cold over there (no heat), and I'm getting tired...

Tomorrow I'll just tackle the blue/red wire mod (rear diff lock in all modes) and remove the passenger seat. The remainder of free time on the house...
