I've seen this in the 3rd gen forum but couldn't find one for 5th.

I just clocked 1 year in my 2014 TEP and have yet to take the mod plunge, partly for fear of opening that Pandora's box of costs. You guys have some amazing builds and I'm always curious how much is being sunk into your rigs. Anyone care to share?

Not bad. Owned it for almost 2 years and spent about $7k on mods for my 4Runner. Parts for this vehicle is relatively cheap compared to vehicles I've modded in the past.
 
A huge factor is if you do all your own installs (not always an option) but that generally saves a large chunk of change so even if two peoples trucks are "the same"

If one paid retail and install costs and the other waited for group buys over years and did all their own installs there can be thousands of dollars in difference.

Another thing to keep in mind for some of us this is our main hobby, not even the off-reading portion but just taking a weekend here or there to install something. So while some of the guys here have gone overboard, and maybe even a few cant really afford it many may not have 10k in mountain bikes, or a fishing boat, or a sports car, or kids etc etc....and I know some have it all :thumb:

I do not track it but it would be fairly easy to determine

There's a big difference between modding a 3rd gen and a 5th gen. I doubt very few will answer and it's something that probably shouldn't be shared. When someone asks how much my latest mountain bike costs I usually don't tell them because if you have to ask, you won't understand. I can say my tires and wheels for my mountain bike cost more than tires and wheels for a 4Runner lol.

Damn those carbon wheel sets: so expensive but SO worth it!
 
I would not dare take the time to answer this question given we did 4 builds in the last 36 months.

More importantly, many people brag about money spend as a reflection of their disposable income. I often wonder when I see people boast about spending $22k on vehicle mods if they have allocated funds to anything useful. It's not even the pessimist in me that wonders, it the business side of my brain.

Not to disrespect anyone who spends money on mods (who am I to judge) by any means. But rather the guys that have thousands in mods, but can hardly scrape buy one paycheck to the next. I've been that guy and I sincerely feel remorse when I see other people walk that line.

I feel like my dad now, taking the time to write that, however this year has been very trying for us with tens of thousands of dollars in unexpected expenses... I know that 25 year old me would have crumbled with <$100 in the bank.
 
For me - as to what's still on my vehicle as a pretty mild mod set,

Front Fox 2.5 Coilovers $400 (I got a very good deal used from an FJ Cruiser owner who bought them and then wanted a bigger lift.)
Rear Fox 2.0 $200
Rear Coil Spacers $50
Winch Mount - $50 in materials (home build)
Winch $400
Winch Wiring/wireless remote/remote box etc. $50.
Sliders - $50 in materials and maybe $20 in hardware.
Skid - Maybe $20 in materials and $5 for hardware.
Tires $750

I think that's about it for me. So roughly $2,000 total not counting a few mods I did and then removed (rear air springs and ebay UCAs). And I would count $300 back off that for what I got from selling my OEM tires.

I'm working on a few new ideas - KDSS relocation brackets to compensate for a small lift.

I do all my own install and manufactured many of the parts, so I've kept costs low. I don't know how I'd do a fair comparison between the net cost of the floor space in my garage for my tools as an ongoing expense (it ain't free to store stuff), the cost of the tools, and the value of my time as compared to just having a shop install my junk and not owning any tools.

I've been reading this forum daily for 2 years so I definitely understand the why part. I ask with no judgement or ulterior motive. I just thought it would be interesting to get a ballpark figure of what people invest in their 4runners. I work with an avid mountain biker who is constantly upgrading his bike so I've seen those prices too. You're not joking!

Well said, ......I had a two page tangent typed up in agreement but realized it was ranting and served no purpose for the thread so I will just say , YES
 
I'll bite. I think I have about $20k into mine. Still cheaper than getting a new Raptor and putting a supercharger in it but... wait... :doh:
 
At a meet and greet last month, a guy was looking at my rig and stated wow you must have spent $20k in mods (he was saying it as a compliment)...I immediately shot back with a "Naw man, no way...not that much"...and then I did some quick mental calculations...:faint: (and no I don't have $20k in mods, but definitely more than I thought)

But...its what I wanted to do and its where I wanted to spend my money. No remorse. I feel fortunate to do that too...they say that if you have no debt, you are wealthier than 75% of all humans. If its what you want to do, then I say go for it...mod away and don't look back. I have other hobbies too...mountain biking, fly fishing, beer drinkin'...just be smart about your spending and self control is the most important part. I was once a jeeper in my early 20's and its a good thing I didn't have expendable income. I built with what little I had and it taught me to spend once, cry once on mods.
