I think we're somewhat in violent agreement here.
Now that you've actually taken the time to explain the context behind your earlier statements, yes, we are in partial agreement.
But when you say stuff like:
Torque is a "meaningless" metric for consumers.
or
A 185hp diesel engine would be too "small" for a 4runner.
or
The v6 gasoline Colorado can "out-tow" the duramax Colorado.
Don't be surprised or offended when other people disagree with you. Your statements were highly subjective and lacking in context.
And FWIW, I would take the 2.8l turbodiesel inline 4 that Toyota offers in its global 4runners and LC Prado's over the 1GR-FE in a heartbeat.
There's not much track record for the 2.8L. It's already a known issue to use in cold weather called the "cold weather surge" problem and hard starts. Colorado owners discuss whether you got a "good one" or a "bad one". Bad ones having cracked manifolds, clogged DPF systems, and regen cycle problems. We do also know it's an updated version of the same VM Motori 2.8 that plagued the Jeep Liberty for a few years. Let's all hope it's a much improved version. That one was terrible.
Actually, there is quite a track record for the 2.8l VM Motori, from which the 2.8L Duramax is derived. It's used in the overseas Jeep, among other SUV's and cars. The US-compliant variant has had some growing pains, as do all new platforms and engines (even Toyota's). But overall, it seems to be an efficient and reliable powertrain.
Comparing the engine noise/comfort as TFL does is a bit of a false comparison. If you slow the Tacoma down to go the same speed as the Diesel Colorado you'd only need to run it at about 3,700 rpms. They didn't do that type of comparison.
3,700 RPM is still high and loud for the 1GR-FE (any sustained driving over 2k RPM's is not fun nor efficient).
Also, if you did slow down that much, you'd still be getting crappy mpg's while getting no tangible "performance" benefit over the diesel....so what would be the point?
The GR lasts basically forever.
It will last a good long while. But at 150k-200k miles, many of those vehicles will have depreciated to $6k-$8k. A well-maintained diesel at that mileage will still fetch a good portion of its original MSRP. There is a reason for that price discrepancy. The 1GR-FE is good engine when used for its intended purpose, but it has its limitations as well.
