Towing?

Hey guys, planning on starting a mowing company and until i have the money to buy a truck, I will be using my 4runner. I will prolly be pulling around 2800-4000lbs with all the equipment loaded and was curious on what mods or tweaking I should do in order to ensure that I will not break anything. I am running duratrac 285's by the way and am well aware that the ol 3.4 will be huffing and puffing around town and on the interstate. I have 4.30 gears already but would prolly need something taller like 4.88's.

I see in your signature you already have a nice lift which helps a bit when towing.

The MAX I would ever tow is 4,000 lbs. So if you ever get that high, I would be cautious.

Also, adding a transmission cooler, especially if your 4runner is an automatic, will significantly reduce the temperature of the oil circulating through your vehicle's transmission. Just a suggestion though.

If you don't already have one, a transmission cooler is a must when towing regularly, and with heavier loads.

Airbags and a Brake Controller (if you don't have one already installed) are a must, extended mirrors and a rear view camera on the back of the trailer (if it's a cargo style trailer).

OK guys so I already have a tranny cooler its the b&m 70264. How do you guys think the tranny will hold up, truck has quite a few miles? Was thinking of actually adding the trd supercharger and valve body upgrade.. But with all that money invested wouldnt it be more worth it to just buy an old d250 12valve cummins or 1st gen powerstroke. Honestly I can find these trucks all over the place for right around 4-5grand. I know mpg will still be poor even with the supercharger and hate racking up that many miles although I do love the idea of supercharging the 4runner I just dont know if its worth it with all of these miles. I also feel like even with the 220-250whp I would get out of the setup it would still be lacking the pulling power in the torque department. What do you guys think, if I can build supercharge the 4runner for around 2.5k to 3k I would be happy to do it but I just dont think it can be done for that cheap

Your wasting your money by supercharging. My last rig was a 99 tacoma supercharged w/ Smaller pulley, dual fans, toyota supra injectors, Highflow walbr pump, magnaflow and 5 speed. Extremely quick but it didn't add much for towing anything much bigger than jetskies. The torque just isn't There for what your doing. You've hot the wrong rig for 4k daily towing. You need an pickup w/ v8. Loose the 285 would be first on my list. My 2 cents.

Nobody even mentioned in your signature it says cbi rear bumper those Def are not rated for towing, because I wanted one, but I tow my boat once a week minimum. Def was not going to chance that!

Its a toyota man! these trucks can do anything. I towed a 1st generation runner with my stock 4 cylinder 3rd generation well over 60 miles and it had no problems at all, and you got a V6 with a trans cooler. You'll be fine man.
