Toyo Open Country A/T II

I need new tires and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Toyo Open Country A/T II. They look like a very nice tire for the price and seem to get good reviews online but looking for input. This winter has been pretty bad and I need to replace the Michelin's I currently have on before next winter. Mostly highway miles with some off road while hunting or camping. My wife and sixteen year old son will also be driving so looking for a good tire without breaking the bank. My past experience with Toyo tires on my VWs has been very good.

Also, what load rating would be recommended. I do minimal towing, occasional load of firewood. If I understand it correctly, C is the minimum but gives a softer ride than E.

I don't have any experience with the toyo AT II, so I cannot comment on the tire itself.

As far as load range goes, go for the C no question. They are lighter and will ride better than D or E. D and E are for full size trucks that tow or carry large payloads and are overkill for our little 4runners in my opinion

Using P rated OC AT2's. I tow a 21' travel trailer and all. Unless you're doing some hard core off roading and need the puncture resistance, it's crazy to go with an LT (C). I know many will disagree on this forum, but I stand my ground. But anyway - I've got about 10k on mine and they don't show many signs of any kind of wear yet. Been good in the snow so far too. No complaints. Not nearly as good as a true snow tire, but good.

My biggest concern is the stopping and turning. Especially on hard packed snow or ice. These do ok. Definitely never ever a problem this winter with climbing Hills or steep driveways or anything.

*edit - look at the load ratings of P rated tires. Especially at various psi's - no need to go with a C or higher.

I had a set on my 4Runner that I had for 6 months. Great in rain, snow, and performed excellent in town/on highway. Great looking tire, with an aggressive tread pattern, yet still a great all around performer. 4 were bought from Les Schwab for $1090. Toyos are usually pretty spendy, at least I feel like they are. If I were looking for an all-terrain, I would look no further. I'd also give the Cooper S/T Maxx a look too. BTW, I had them in the LT265/75/16 Load E flavor... no complaints.

I've had my Toyo's for almost two years with about 12,000 miles. All I have to say is...these tires are AWESOME!! I spend 85% on road and 15% off road. These tires have perform great in rain/snow and do decent in ice. Very aggressive tread for an All Terran tire...does well off road expect heavy/deep mud. If you can keep the wheel speed up, your OK, which will keep the tire cleaned out. But being we drive under-powered 4Runners...that's not easy to do...lol!! But does very well in all other off road/trail conditions. The only thing I can not report on is rocks crawling...never done it.

But one of the best attributes of this tire...so very quite! No road noise at all! Oh yeah....and a 65,000 mile warranty (metric sizes), how can you go wrong?!? Heck, they also have 30 day/500 mile warranty. Try them out for 30 days...don't like them, take them back for a full refund!

I've had the Toyo's for almost a year now. They've done great in everything I've been able to throw them at except deep mud like mentioned above. With all the recent snow that hit the South I was able to finally get them in some snow. In AWD I was able to swerve back and forth on the snow covered road at 35 mph without any slippage at all. I have nothing but good things to say about them. They are wearing great after almost 10k miles. Look just as good as the day I put them on.

I picked up my 295/75/16E for $950 out the door. With the E rating I noticed they do feel a bit stiffer than my old C rated tires, but that was expected.

As far as your concern with P rated vs LT, the LTs will have deeper tread and slightly thicker sidewall pattern giving them a more aggressive look. Other than that, I don't really know anything else about the P rated.

Edit: I should also add that I have the "Extreme" version which only come in select sizes. This give them a deeper and wider tread pattern and a slightly more aggressive sidewall pattern.

You don't need to be a "hardcore" offroader to want better sidewalls. I've lost P rated tires to pinch flats and sidewall gashes on very mild trails. I think if you get away from pavement at all, a slightly bumpier ride is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

Unless your truck is a car, in which case nevermind.

I have run 2 sets of the original Open Country ATs in 265/75/16 and now have the newer AT IIs in 265/75/16. Each set have been the P rated. Honestly, I don't see how some of the guys on here drive a daily commuter with LT rated tires. At 32 psi my P rated are stiff enough with my Toytec ultimate lift. I have been offroad in some pretty serious rock and mud and the ATs and AT IIs have performed flawlessly. Like you, I am mostly onroad with occasional offroading, like 5% and I tow a trailer every once in a while.

I think the LT rated tires would be overkill. Also, I got about 70-80k out of the first 2 sets I ran. I hope to do as well with the newer AT II.

In looking at Toyo's specifications, the P rated actually has a higher max load than the LT-C rated tire, 2601 v 2407. And the tread and side wall construction is the same between the P and LT-C tires. The only difference I can see is 3/32" less tread depth on the P versus the LT. And the P is rated for 65,000 miles versus 50,000 on the LT.

Here's some pics of my P Rated on my 4th Gen. 265-70-27. For the record, it's a 2/1 lift.

In all fairness the LT more aggressive look would be nice to have, but only cosmetically. (The LT's even weigh more/have more rotational weight to slow you down a tad as well).

It's not the Toyo's that are spendy, it's Les Schwab that is spendy.

Les Schwab is good when it comes to customer service, but you definitely pay for it.

Most of their inventory are off-brand tires, at first-brand prices.

Toyo is the one stand out brand in their inventory, and is a quality tire. But they can be purchased for far less than you would pay at Les Schwab.

I know it's an old thread, but am reviving it as it was helpful in my search for tire info.

Just got these tires for my Limited 5th gen in 265/70 R17 on 17" TRD trail wheels from Gateway Tire. I've been surprised with the aggressive appearance and how quiet they are on the highway going 70+. Multiple people at the tire shop (as well as here on the boards) have said they go for 50-60k miles plus.

I've had the BFG KO2s on my Wrangler and was pleased with them but didn't really have a need for something that aggressive or expensive. No doubt the KO2s are a solid choice, but these are a great alternative for those looking. Pics to follow

I had the ATII on two separate vehicles and they were excellent - I would recommend them to anyone. I switched to their MT on both my 4runners and will stick with them even though they are heavier. 100% happy with this tire in all respects. Big toyo fan after switching from BFG & goodyear from past use. Even the MT's have kept their balance, low noise and wear has been excellent. I am about 50% right now with 38K miles on them.

Done as much research as possible. I've also decided on these tires. LT class C version. Four wheel parts here locally has them out the door for about $690. Not including mounting. Toyo website has them rated 4.3 out of five stars on 211 reviews. Figure I'll give them a try

I've had mine for only a few thousand miles but so far I'm happy with them. Went from all seasons that were on my 4runner when I bought it to the AT2's and the road noise is slightly louder but doesn't bother me. Looking forward to getting them in some snow this season to see how they do. Went with the 295/75/16 "extreme" version.
