toyo open country mt's

i have searched and searched for 5th gens running Toyo Open Country MT's and just can't really find any. My wife's FJ has 295/70/17 on the factory wheel, and was wondering if a 285/70/17 will fit on the 5th gen with the Toytec Boss Lift. Any info or pics would be great

It will definitely fit.

Here are some issues to consider:
1. Consider a wider rim = safer when airing down and less chance of losing bead

2. Will likely have to do the fender mod and might have to do a body mount chop to eliminate possible rubbing at full lock. Both are covered extensively in the forum by people much smarter than me.

I had 285's on my factory sr5 wheels which are 7" wide. They drove fine but it seemed that the center was getting all the contact they are p rated so I aired them to 35 psi and drove for a few days. And it honestly seemed like the outside edges about 1.5 inches never touched the pavement. I figured they were bulged in the middle, so I went with an 8" wide wheel and they seem to be wearing perfect now.

They're a fine tire.
Stick with the stock size LT 265/70-R17 - no reason to go bigger.
Definitely get the E rated (10 ply equivalent). Indestructable.

On my '13 SR5:

No reason for lifts, fender cutting.....

Thanks for the info....The lift came in today, tires will be about a week out. I am going to go with the 285/70/17 toyos I think. Car should be here in about 2 weeks. Im pumped!

For being a major manufacturer, Toyo's seem hard to come by, at least online in a 285/70r17 size. They're not carried, by Discounttire.com, tirerack.com, Walmart, & even 4 Wheel Parts doesn't offer them in that size. However they are a tire I see all the time here in Northern NV, but mostly on pickups in a 35" or larger size. Ron, how are the road noise on these?

I've read that narrow rims make airing down more likely to have a bead come loose. I'm not sure what the basis for this is. I've generally found the opposite to be true. Long before we had today's double beadlock wheels, it was really common to run 33 12.5 15 tires on 8" rims for the specific purpose of holding the wheel better. This was an empirical observation from thousands of miles of low tire pressure use. Then we started putting screws through the rim into the bead area to hold the tires in place and gluing the tire to the wheel. Then better bead locks finally hit the market en-mass about 10 years ago.

I think they'll wear funny and possibly also give a poor handling quality on the narrower wheel, but I do not think they will unseat the bead at low pressure any more than on an wider wheel. This isn't a dedicated trail rig and I would go either with a tire appropriate for the wheel - like a 255/80/17 or buy some wider wheels when you can afford it. FJ cruiser or Trail Edition wheels can be had pretty cheaply in local classifieds. I bough some FJ Cruiser wheels as backups for $150 for a set IIRC.

The 4runner is just a more sophisticated FJ. JK Almost identical vehicles just a longer wheel base among other things

Yep; noisy.

The toyo OCMT is by far the most quiet MT tread tire on the market. If you think those are loud, ride around with some Mud Grapplers on

Had a set on my Xterra. Great tires but be sure you read about the pull that you'll get with an assymetical MT tire. They all have it to some extent, and the Toyos are no exception. Will pull to one side at speed.

Check the Euro noise ratings for your size. You'll be surprised by the results. The KM2s test as quieter than the Toyos in most sizes.

Mine were surprisingly quiet when new, but got much louder as they wore - like most MT tires. Didn't have a problem with the noise, myself, but it certainly isn't easy to just ignore.

If you must have an MT, then check out the Hankook MTs for no pull to one side and a quieter ride without compromising traction..

The deliberate under sizing, shifty rain characteristics and thin sidewalls make the KM2 super unappealing to me. I hated mine. Granted they were/are the best looking tire on the market.

The euros may claim they're quieter but the majority says otherwise. The euros can't even measure fuel milage even close to as 'accurate' as the EPA, and that's pathetic

My point on the Euro noise ratings was simply that asking people their opinion of whether or not a tire is loud can only get you so far. Loud as compared to what? - the last tire they owned, their cousins F250 thats running 37x12.50s?.

Standardized testing of measured noise levels of an actual tire in a specific size is a good source for comparison. It may only be one factor in the comparison, but it is backed up by at least some form of measurement rather than just opinion.
