Toyota 0W20 vs. Mobile 1 0W20 Observation

It is not worth much more than the price of admission, either (ie, free). 2 free oil changes at 10k and 20k, and 5 free tire rotations every 5k. I used my oil changes at 5k and 10k. Just went in for my freebie 15k "service" (tire rotation) with 15.4k on the clock and was informed, "I'm sorry, that expired due to mileage. We'll have to use your final 25k service." I was dumbfounded. What a shortsighted business model, to give folks the rub over something so trivial, but so not worth arguing over either... it is more inconvenient to wait at the dealer than just rotate them in the garage anyway.

That is truly shortsighted. Not a successful way to build customer loyalty.

I haven’t heard anyone say that except a service writer and we all know they know nothing. Check out the VOAs posted around if you want to know the difference. Not the same oil. I switched to M1 EP and haven't looked back.

I've used AMSOIL and castrol on a majority of my cars. Use mobil1 in my isf with no issues.

I used motul in my STi and it seems to hold up well with e85. Mobil 1 on the other hand just runs right through it and some folks have large oil consumpition issues with mobil 1 in those engines

Yep they are different, good call, the Toyota version is a little thinner and....I will be sticking with it. But it wouldn't really matter which one is used since they both do the same thing.

Yep. I stopped using the TGMO due to availability mostly.
No oil consumption issues at all.
The M1 Extended Performance and new Annual Protection are pretty good, some say superior, compared to the Advanced Fuel Economy version. For me a big benefit is not dealing with qt sized bottles and I can easily reuse the 5 qt containers for the dump oil.

That is nothing more than seat of the pants or wet finger internet banter. I see no concrete lab data supporting their observations.

If it comes from the same Exxon Mobil plant, it's the same stuff except for maybe differences in additives. It all comes out the same spigot and they pull the Toyota additive spigot, if there is a difference.

Mobil 1 vs Toyota motor oil

Which M1 0w-20? AFE? EP? Now there's a new one for $50/5qts. "Annual Protection".
Anyway, I quit using TGMO when it became harder for me to source and the M1 EP dropped to $24/5qts. Did not notice a sound or performance difference but I did find it easier to read the dipstick.

What is TGMO? I've seen this acronym used twice in the first two dozen posts. Is this the Toyota motor oil?

I just bought all the Mobil 1 oil I need for an oil change and changing all of the gear oils. I went Mobil 1 because I didn't want to pay twice the price for Toyota which is bottled by Exxon Mobil.

BTW, yes they get all the Mobil oil in Mobile, Alabama.

Been using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy for the past 4 oil changes. The only difference I noticed was the first oil change @ 5,000 miles. Fuel economy and engine performance did change for the better. The noise did not change and I believe it is the characteristics of the engine. I also use Toyota oil filter and there is 25,000 miles on the engine.

Start up an Honda accord, Nissan maxima and a Mitsubishi galant. They all sound different when started and while running.

My free service is done so I'll be changing it myself soon. I was going to spend the money on Amsoil but thought I'd look for something I can by local. Researching led me to that. Not sure which brand I'll choose when the time comes but I won't lose sleep over deciding.

Larry Miller?

This^^^^. My time is valuable and I refuse to wait for service alongside googans with pretty fingernails. I can do the work quicker and better than any service tech. My wife thought the free service was the greatest thing, so I made her take it in and wait. Now, I do all the work.

DIY oil change vs. dealer's "free" oil changes

That's too funny CTS,
I never thought of waiting for that service. I was working a block away when I got the first two services and I just left it with them for a few hours.

The dealer cured me of ever coming back when they over-torqued the skid plate back on. I had to cut the thing off when I need to work on installing the new lift.

Yes, I'll be doing my own oil change next time. Very soon actually. I'm about to install the Baxter Performance remote oil filter adapter so I don't have to pull the RCI skid plates off to change the oil.
