I remember Toyota finally admitted in 2002 that there were over 3,000 complaints, so how did that get to be 3.5 million. Were in the heck did that number come from?

I think the 3.5 million might be the number POTENTIALLY affected, the number of cars with the affected engines.

Let's say the actual number of sludge engines is 35,000, just to be conservative. That's a large number, but still just one percent of the total.

These statements worry me. Hopefully, he means that the cost cutting will be in more efficient designs and methods....and NOT on the materials and cutting corners during manufacturing. But, unfortunately, whenever a company strives for the bottomline (as is evident in the quote above), it is the product that suffers...as an example, see Mercedes downfall in the 1990's.
