The 3rd Gen still looks the best, but the 5th Gen Trail Editions are second on my list.

I really think a lot of people like the 3rd or the 5th - the 4th seemed to get a little too 'soft' (to take a term from above) with its looks. I have passed a couple really well maintained 3rd's lately and liked them as well. We all have our own opinions, if we didn't we would all be driving a Taurus

that's the first time i've heard that. and there's nothing 'soft' about the v8 which neither the 3rd nor 5th offer (wink wink!)
and i drove a 3rd gen before my 4th.

I like all of them for different reasons, having a special place in the heart for the first gen 1984-85. My only negative comment about the older ones is that they are underpowered which for me, makes them less fun to drive. Especially when on your way up HWY 70 to Copper or Up Hwy 50 to S. Lake Tahoe. With my 4th gen V8, it's fun. I can't speak toward the 5th gen but I bet it's a kick to drive.
To the OP, yes, they are growing on me daily. For me though, the LT is not for me. TE all the way...

Tushay! I do agree, I would like a V8 in the 5th, but it was not enough to stop me from making the jump
Surprised it is the 1st time you heard it, I have read it a number of times on the forum. I admit I almost pulled the trigger on a used 08' until I saw the 5th.

Can't see the v8 with the hood closed so that has no effect on styling to me but more power in the 3rd gen would've been nice. I like the 5th gen styling since it resembles more of a truck especially the TE model. I like the 4th gens but in stock trim they did look a bit soft and more at home toting mom and the kids around than they did hitting a trail. The 5th gen has more styling cues that look more like a progression from the 3rd gens than the 4th gens ever did and it's the first time in a while I've been excited about a 4Runner and will be getting TE in the next few years but for now no car payment is real nice and my '99 still has a lot left in it.

As the previous owner of 2 3rd Gens (97 4runner limited and 2001 4runner sport) and 2 4th gens (2005 [totalled] and 2006) and now the very proud owner of my first 5th gen, I can say that I really loved my 3rd over my 4th. My 97 limited with the maroon on silver was my favorite, and I would probably still have it if someone hadn't stolen it. (Apprently, someone else loved my 4runner too.) I admit, the 4th gens seemed a little less aggressive to me and I didn't care for the SLOPING hood as much - but being the avid 4runner person I am I had to have another. The main reason I went from my 2001 sport (3rd) to the 4th was the space. The cabin was much bigger and the vehicle was wider. I am VERY much in love with my 5th. I didn't care for the bulging lights initially but they've now grown on me. Can't wait to see the 6th gen! ha

Well the 5th gen guys will all vote one way, with the 4th guys the other...
what would be interesting would be polling all the 3rd gen guys.
Coming from 2 3rd gens before my 5th, I felt the 4th was too soft. the 5th was perfect update of the 3rd gen....

+1. I held on to my 3rd as long as I could. Then the 5th came out, and I loved it.

I think nah2323 works for Toyota and is looking for free advertisement. I drove two 2010s (limited and trail) and left disappointed.
I had a 4th gen and I really did like it - but nothing compares to my 5th gen - it is far and away my favorite looking and performing 4Runner.
The 5th gen Limited manages to capture the tuff, strong look as well as the elegant and classy look - and it's not just skin deep - this things capable through and through - a 'Homerun' indeed!

Reading COMPREHENSION obviously isn't your forte either. The thread is about the STYLING of the 5th Gen. Either you like it's styling look or you don't and has nothing to do with test drives.The styling obviously peaked your interest or you wouldn't have wasted your time going to the dealership in the first place.
Off topic but ...... These new dual vvt-i V6's need breaking in and don't really come into their own til after the 1000 mile break in when you can push it on a regular basis.Plenty of HP/Torque and would probably smoke an early 4th Gen V8 in the quarter and still get at least 3-4 more mpg.Later 4th Gen V8's were good engines but the first couple year 4TH gen V8's were gas eating dogs.
On topic.... I admit....I didn't like the styling of the headlights and taillights sticking out at first. The look has grown on me and I now think the unique styling is second to none and wouldn't trade it for anything.
Not only was it a Homerun,it was a GRAND SLAM
