Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

Did anyone had their issue with the propeller shaft come back? I brought mines into the dealer on 6/12 to get it replaced. 10 months after being replaced, I am starting to feel that clunk again. :(

Have you been lubing the new driveshaft? Makes all the difference... I feel this problem keeps occurring, even after replacement, because the new driveshafts aren't being lubricated (and neither was your original, most likely).

Pump that sucker full of grease (I mean a lot) - then remove the entire zerk fitting and move the truck back and forth a few times, hitting brakes fairly hard to allow some squat in both directions. Wipe away the excess grease that came out where the fitting was and reinstall the zerk fitting. This is the only way I figured out mine was no where near full.

I put a few more squirts of grease in every 3,000 miles or so and I have not had the problem re-occur in 13,000 miles.

Now, that's sounds like a good advise.

I have a '12 Limited w/ full time 4wd. Just coming up on 2,000km (1,200miles). Should I be going in to the dealership early to address this or wait for my first oil change? I don't have a shudder/shake... It's more of a mild-moderate jerk/slip when shifting from first to 2nd. Would it be wise to take it in early to avoid long-term tranny issues or is this more or less normal function? Can't believe I even just wrote that regarding my 4Runner.

Brought the truck in for the 25,000 mile service last saturday and also complained about the clunk/thump noise coming back a year later after they replaced the propeller shaft. I also complained about the harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd and explained to them the hesitation I get when I step on the on the gas. So service advisor called me today and told me that they will be replacing my transmission due to the hesitation but the service tech could not replicate the clunk/thump noise. So know I don't know if I should feel happy that they are changing the transmission or be upset about it.

The "clunk" could also be coming from gear lash in the rear differential. This could explain why some people get their drive shaft replaced and then either the clunk is still there or it "reappears" later on.

Gear lash occurs when tolerances between the gear teeth of the meshing gears increase to the point that there is "play" in the gears. So when you accelerate or let off the gas suddenly you get a clunk. It's a fairly common phenomenon in motorcycles that have a drive shaft. It happens in other vehicles as well.

If you like to take off like a comet from a stop light, you could be putting undue wear and tear on the gears in your rear differential. A lot of people don't have experience driving offroad so when they get in situations where they think they need to "punch it" they create another instance where they can be messing up the gears in their differential.

It's a problem that usually becomes obvious over time. But once the lash is there, it's there to stay or become worse unless the differential is opened up and necessary repairs are made.

I am in the exact same boat as this ^^^^^

OK,so yesterday 9/4/13 I had the drive shaft replaced on my 12 LE, the tech said he had test drove it and the sound was gone. Trusting him on his word I happily drove out of the dealership, problem fixed? No.
So i drove it back and got the service manager AND the tech who replaced my drive shaft and took them for a drive.
I had no problem replicating the sound, the service manager said "OK" the tech said "Oh that sound, that's perfectly normal and every Toyota does that" To which I said, "Really" how come I never heard it until just recently and how come it only does it in 4th gear?
I then said to the service manager let's go take a new LE for a drive and if that vehicle does the same thing I'll assume your tech is right, he said OK and 5 mins later the service manager and I were driving in a new 13 LE.......no drive train thumping in ANY gear, he said OK the only thing he can do now is open a file with Toyota and try and find out what is causing the noise.
So for now I'm happy I proved my point, happy that it did not happen in the new LE as to me it's quite an annoying sound/feel.......I will just have to wait until we find out what happens now.
Has anyone else heard the same thing from their LE's?????

Called toyota to schedule a tech to look at mine, mentioned these symptoms and this tsb, the service lady on the phone said she never heard of it! I printed it out, and will be bringing it with me. Hopefully I won't have to fight them.
I have 52k on my 2011 sr5. I need this fix before it's too late, I drive a lot...

Anything else I can do to make this easier, be more persuasive?

Hopefully the TSB will do the magic and the dealer wont give you a hard time. As of me, I drop off the truck today and found out more details to what they are going to do. They are definitely replacing the transmission and ECU and also the drive shaft which supposedly was replace last year. I hope everything turns out ok with all this replacement parts they are doing. Pray for my truck guys!

I have the same problem in a 2013 and Toyota isn't willing to address the problem because my model year isn't mentioned.

I'm still waiting to hear back from my dealership, the replaced the driveshaft and greased the fittings and I'm still getting a driveshaft clunk......seems to be getting worse to me???????????????????????:tape2:

Seems like its a lot less occurring in the colder weather, I bet I won't be able to show them the thump when I bring it in

Wow! I recommend we don't criticize Jeep GCs anymore.

No I haven't. I did notice that that the thump is considerably less since the dealer fixed the brake fade problem I had. And the weird part about the brake fade fix....the dealer claims they did nothing to the truck!

Mine is worse when in sport mode and in 4th or 5th gear,. when I get off the gas, coast and then get back on the gas I hear/feel a thud in the driveshaft.
Still waiting to hear from my dealership and Toyota.
