TPMS and 2 Sets of Wheels

2010 Limited (why else would I be posting in the 5th Gen. forum?). Bought new, then swapped the 20" wheels for 17" SR5 wheels about three weeks later. The tire shop moved the TPMS sensors from the 20" Limited wheels to the 17" SR5 wheels, mounted new tires and installed on car. The spare was untouched. The TPMS light came on when I started the car, blinked for a few seconds, then lit steady - been doing this ever since...

The 2010 Limited wheels have the sensor attached to the tire stem, with the nut on the outside of the wheel. The spare tire is just a normal tire stem - and I assume there is no TPMS sensor inside - don't know why they would use a different type than the other four wheels on the car. Nothing has been done to the spare tire since new and there is no sensor in the glove box.

So I guess that does bring up a good question - is there a TPMS in the spare, and if so, why did they use a different type I wonder?

same issue here on my 5th gen. light blinks then is steady for the duration. i swapped 17s for 20s as well but left the tpms with the original wheels and did not touch the spare so i have a mixed bag now. will have it reset at discount tire when i'm ready to rotate or balance next. stealership wanted close to $100 to reset it when they did my last oil change.

I bet you are right - cost saving move. It is a four-hour trip for me to go to the dealer so I'll have them look at it when I go in for my first oil change at 10 grand miles later this spring. Thanks...

why do they need to be reset with the addition of 17inch wheels? i just removed my 20"s and installed the SR5 17"s. no issues at all with the TPMS. the spare does not have a TPMS. i let the air out the spare and no light came on, plus the stem is just rubber. i called 4 toyota dealerships and 2 said they do have a tpms in the spare and 2 said no the spare does not have a tpms, ha.

4 runner looks much better without gangster tires/wheels....

Will the ATEQ Quickset tool work on a 2012 SR5. Has anyone used this yet on a 2012? I plan on getting a second set of wheels and put snow tires on them. I am looking into picking up a set of 17" FJ wheels.

What year is your T4R? They all came with 5 sensors, which includes the spare.

Not sure where you got that information from because my OEM spare had a rubber valve stem which means NO TMPS. I do have TMPS on all 5 now because I had Discount Tire install a TMPS sensor when I switched to my TRD rims. I have a 2010 Limited.

OP, you may want to check and see if you have metal valves on all 4 driving rims. Maybe your guy messed one up and installed a regular (rubber) valve.
