TPMS and tire rotation on 2017 LE

When rotating the tires on my LE does the ECU have to be updated with tire position or do the four codes loaded in the computer figure out where they are automatically?

The reason I ask is that I am going to mount a set of winter tires on a spare set of rims and the tire shop says they can "clone" my present sensor numbers onto the new programable TPMS sensors. If I ten choose to change the wheels/tires at home, do I need the tool to reset the ECU to where the tires are positioned after the change or is the system smart enough to determine where the TPMS are after the wheel change without reloading the new positions?

You don't need to do anything but there are 5 TPMS sensors...the spare has one also.

If there is discrepancy such as one tire is 6 psi less than other ones you will get TPMS light. 4th gen owners would get this all the time in winter because spare has TPMS and they would forget to inflate that fifth tire to match other 4. As for cloning sensors I'm skeptical because your system is only accepts 5 serial code numbers and I'll be impressed to see tire shop flawlessly hack into those codes to make identical twins of 4. ecu knows about the locations and the pressure at the locations, but it doesn't display it. You can get a aftermarket NAV and it'll read the tpms data and properly display it.

it is very easy to clone tpms sensors. Just that the clones won't be oem denso.

FWIW, Techstream on my '15 LE just shows 5 positions labeled 1-5.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't a location indicator in the screenshot. There are sensors 1-5 and all the info from the sensors. I don't see anything on the screen that locate sensors 1-5 to a location.

When I talked to the dealer about my Toyota Care tire rotations, they said the 4Runner doesn't track the tire location. There is nothing they do in the ECU when they do a tire rotation.

I follow the below rotation and NOT the Toyota suggested method.

Five (5) Tire Rotation
While many vehicles are equipped with temporary spares that cannot be included in a tire rotation program, if the vehicle's four wheels and tires on the ground match the spare wheel and tire (if non-directional and not branded "for temporary use"), they should be included in the tire rotation pattern. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire rotation procedures, or if not available, insert the spare in the right rear position at every rotation. Place the tire that would have gone to the right rear in the trunk as the spare until the next tire rotation.

On front-wheel drive cars with full-size matching spare, rotate the tires in a forward cross pattern (Figure F)

On rear-wheel or four-wheel drive cars with full-size matching spare, rotate the tires in a rearward cross pattern (Figure G)

so you just drive around with one steel wheel? how do you do a 5 wheel rotation?

Unless you tell ECU where each TPMS is located and then somehow update it every time you rotate tires - there is no location priority.

This is the Toyota suggested 5 wheel rotation. Note that in this method not all tires wear equally.

It is right to buy four-piece aftermarket sensors.
To clone with the original numbers.
So changing tires from summer to winter will not require training with other numbers.
Or to put original or other sensors with other numbers, but when changing tires, you will need training with diagnostic equipment.
His ecu needs to know the numbers of the screws he does not care otherwise.

Is it possible for the system to be programmed for a different pressure than factory 2.2 bar.
Is it possible for the system to be programmed to look for 4 instead of 5 sensors?
Or for example 9 or 10 sensors if there are two sets of tires?
And how is this done?

My '15 Limited has a matching spare and been doing 5-wheel rotations for the past 2 years.

1) There is no issue there because as long as your pressures all same you can run 32, 40,44 or whatever psi you want without TPMS warning.
2) I think it is possible to delete spare tire code but I've never done it because my 2013 has none for spare.
3) No, for 9 or 10. You only have 5 slots. Your registration TPMS codes have to be identical to existing to trick the ECU into thinking you have same sensors.
